Why Zac Taylor and the Bengals Front Office Seem Out of Touch with Their Fan Base

Are Zac Taylor and the Cincinnati Bengals front office out of touch with what the fans want? A recent press conference made fans feel that's the case.

The Cincinnati Bengals have not had the season they hoped for, but that seems to be more the norm rather than the exception.

That’s why, when it was revealed that head coach Zac Taylor’s contract was a year longer than expected, fans were shocked. Let’s take a look at that press conference and what made it such a challenging listen for Bengals fans.

Is Bengals HC Zac Taylor As Tone Deaf As It Seems?

A report from Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic, which shocked Bengals fans, was released on Tuesday, Dec. 16th, stating that Taylor signed a second extension after the Bengals’ AFC Championship run in 2022, keeping him as the Bengals’ coach through 2027.

Then, on Wednesday, the Bengals held their press conference, with Taylor speaking to the media, and many felt he came across as tone-deaf to the questions asked.

Bengals fans were already having a rough week when they learned Taylor has another season remaining on his contract, but hearing him speak at the press conference took it to another level. Benglas media asked Taylor some questions that, while hard-hitting, were reasonable questions that everyone wanted answers to.

When asked if his contract had been extended and runs through the 2027 season, Taylor completely ignored the question. He stated that it didn’t matter and that he coached every game as if it were his last. When the media said they didn’t get to speak with ownership, he said, “I’m sorry,” which came off as condescending.

I’m sure Taylor is frustrated with constantly having to answer questions that the front office and ownership should address, but as the Bengals’ head coach, that is your job. You can’t come off the way he did with the media without getting some backlash. However, that might not have been what angered the fans the most.

What likely annoyed fans the most was his saying he had done this before in 2019 and 2020, and how they responded to that. The playoff runs in 2021 and 2022 were three years ago, and fans no longer want to hear about them. The Bengals have missed the playoffs for three straight years, and two years of success out of seven for Taylor is nothing to brag about. Fans want to look forward, not backwards.

Taylor has been losing steam with Bengals fans for the last year, and this press conference did him no favors. He came across as condescending and extremely confident about his status with the team next year. It rubbed a large part of the fan base the wrong way.

While Taylor was the one taking questions, this press conference also highlighted how out of touch the front office is with fans. The media doesn’t get to ask Mike Brown or Katie and Troy Blackburn questions, leaving Taylor to answer everything. Ownership could earn some goodwill with the fans if it made itself more available.
