Just when it appeared that the receiving corps would finally be healthy and firing on all cylinders, a first-round pick was a late-week addition to the Friday injury report. As of Saturday afternoon, his status was still uncertain.
Rookie wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan has unquestionably been the go-to target for the Carolina Panthers’ passing offense all season. If McMillan can’t give it a go on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints, who does Bryce Young and the Panthers’ offense use to supplement the significant production loss?
The Carolina Panthers’ Offense Could Be Without Star WR
McMillan leads all receivers with 41 receptions, 558 receiving yards, and two touchdowns. Seventeen of the rookie’s 41 catches this season have gone for explosive receptions of 16+ yards.
McMillan has served as Young’s security blanket, of sorts, having caught three passes on fourth down. The rookie is one of 10 players league-wide with three+ fourth down catches, and one of seven with three+ fourth down conversions.
In the 2024 season for the Panthers’ offense, that role was often filled by Adam Thielen. However, Jalen Coker also proved to be a reliable target as an undrafted free agent rookie, only dropping one pass in 46 targets.
Coker has been working himself back into the offensive game plan after being sidelined with a hamstring injury himself for the first six weeks. Canales mentioned this week that he and offensive coordinator Brad Idzik intended to work the second-year playmaker further into the offense as a feature piece.
Xavier Legette was thrust into a larger-than-expected role in his rookie season last year, when Carolina traded away receiver Diontae Johnson mere months after acquiring him.
Legette stands to see a more prominent role, as well, having familiarity as a volume receiver within the offensive system. Despite having some drop issues, Legette finished second on the team in touchdown receptions with four.
The second-year wideout from the University of South Carolina has had an up-and-down sophomore campaign thus far. He sits at No. 78 in PFSN’s WRi rankings.
The most likely Panthers’ skill player to ‘pick up the slack’, should McMillan take the week off? Workhorse running back Rico Dowdle.
Now, I’m not suggesting that he’ll align out wide as the X receiver, but I think the offense will undoubtedly operate through the NFC’s leading rusher.
On Saturday, Carolina elevated wide receiver Dan Chisena to the active roster. That move, however, is likely more to do with Brycen Tremayne’s questionable game status than McMillan’s, as Tremayne is a key special teams contributor, and that’s Chisena’s calling card as well.
