The Arizona Cardinals have started backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett for the last three weeks, and the Cardinals’ offense has looked good.
Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon announced on Tuesday that Brissett would be Arizona’s Week 10 starter and announced on Wednesday that quarterback Kyler Murray would be placed on injured reserve.
Many fans were more than alright with Brisset continuing to start, and that includes Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner.
Why Does Kurt Warner Believe In Jacoby Brissett?
The Cardinals seemed to have turned a corner with Brissett behind center, with a new sense of hope around the team after Monday night’s win against the Dallas Cowboys.
The offense scored 27 points, accumulating 330 yards of total offense, and converted third downs more than 50% of the time.
With Brissett as the starter, the Cardinals have three of their five best offensive performance of the season, according to PFSN’s Offense Impact.
Former Cardinals quarterback and Hall of Famer Kurt Warner spoke with PHNX this week about the Cardinals quarterback situation and his confidence in Brissett.
“Jacoby’s a really good quarterback,” Warner said. “So, let’s at least start there, and understand that this is a pro quarterback – starting caliber quarterback – that took over. It’s not just a backup that came in and and you go, ‘Oh my gosh, the offense looks completely different.'”
Brissett signed with the Cardinals in 2025 to be Murray’s backup. However, the 10-year NFL veteran has started 56 games in his career, including 16 over the last three years, before signing with Arizona.
The Cardinals’ quarterback has made a career out of being a backup, but he’s been a reliable one who has filled in for his team’s starter in many instances.
Brissett has only had three years in his NFL career, during which he hasn’t started a game.
“The first thing that we have to recognize here, too, is I don’t know if enough people are pointing to this – normally when you have a team, you have a definitive starter,” Warner said. “Like, your starter’s up here, and then your backup’s kind of down here somewhere. So, when you go through a situation like this, you kind of expect a drop-off to your starting quarterback.
“With Jacoby Brissett, here’s a guy who has been a starter in the NFL. A guy that I believe – if there’s a team that needs a starter from the allotment of players that are in the National Football League right now – I think Jacoby as a backup quarterback would be on the top of most people’s lists, as a guy that can step in and be a starter.”
That’s quite the compliment to begin with, let alone from one of the greatest Cardinals quarterbacks of all time.
Warner played the last five seasons of his 12-year career with the Cardinals and took them to the 2008 Super Bowl.
The Hall of Fame quarterback threw for more than 15,000 yards and 100 touchdowns as a Cardinal.
Brissett may have been Arizona’s backup coming into the season, but Warner believes the 10-year veteran deserves some respect for the level of play he’s produced.
