NFL Rumors: Packers ‘Working On A Trade’ For $76.4M Pro Bowler To Stay In NFC’s Super Bowl Race

The Green Bay Packers are working on a trade for a Pro Bowler after the Los Angeles Rams shocked everyone by getting Myles Garrett.

With today’s date being June 1, there was an expectation that a number of trades would occur. Already, probably the trade of the offseason occurred with star EDGE Myles Garrett being sent to the Los Angeles Rams for a massive haul.

The Garrett trade came out of nowhere and shocked many, but he may not be the only defensive lineman getting moved today.

Rumors Swirl That Packers May Be Adding to Their Defense via a Trade

The Green Bay Packers had a disappointing season last year, especially after trading for star pass rusher Micah Parsons. The defensive lineman ended up tearing his ACL late in the season, and it was a massive blow to the team’s Super Bowl aspirations. His timetable for return should allow him to be available at the beginning of the season, but there’s a chance that it won’t happen.

Last season, the Packers’ defense was ranked 20th in sack % according to PFSN’s Defensive Impact Metric. That’s nowhere near good enough, and although Parsons coming back healthy will help, adding to that group could go a long way.

According to Easton Butler, that player could be Arizona Cardinals pass rusher Josh Sweat:

“Hearing the Packers and Cardinals are working on a trade involving Josh Sweat, per source,” Butler wrote on X. “It is coming down to how much cap the Packers are willing to take, and how high of a pick.”

If this deal goes through, Sweat would be an excellent addition to the Packers’ defense. Sweat recorded a career-high 12 sacks last season and posted a 73.6 impact score on PFSN’s EDGE Impact Metric.

Sweat also has deep familiarity with Jonathan Gannon (the former Philadelphia Eagles DC and Cardinals HC), having played under him for three seasons. Gannon is currently the Packers’ defensive coordinator, and this could be something Sweat is pushing for.

Sweat is currently on a four-year, $76.4M contract, with three years remaining. If completed, it would be a significant financial move by the Packers.

For the Cardinals, it makes sense to move on from Sweat. Although he is a good player to have on any defense, they are in the first year of a major rebuild, so getting draft capital back in any deal could go a long way.

As of now, this is just a rumor, but that could change quickly.
