While there’s a lot of focus on NFL League Meetings and the NFL Draft, something that has flown under the radar is that the NFL Referees Association Collective Bargaining Agreement is set to expire at the end of May.
It appears that there is no solution on the horizon, and the league is preparing to hire replacement referees from Division I, II, and III.
How the NFL World Is Reacting to Replacement Referees
Sunday night, 33rd Team contributor Ari Meirov posted the following regarding the league’s current negotiations with referees:
“With no progress being made with the current referees, there is a belief that the NFL is likely to soon hire 150–180 officials from DI, DII, and DIII colleges as replacement refs to prepare for the upcoming season.”
NFL writer and insider John Frascella posted, “This NFL officiating situation is an unmitigated DISASTER… do you remember what happened last time we had replacement refs? It was absolute MAYHEM… Buckle up for some nonsense and BS this season, my friends.”

Irish NFL analyst Sam Monson adds, “The last time this happened was such an unmitigated s***show it was one of the few things that has ever made the NFL blink. Kinda wild that they’re prepared to let it happen again.”
NFL analyst and podcast host Brett Kollmann simply writes, “God help us all.”
A sports prediction app called “Onyx Odds” posted, “Here we go again,” with an image of the “Fail Mary” from a Green Bay Packers-Seattle Seahawks game. This game occurred during the last labor dispute between the league and referees, which led to the use of replacement referees.
During the last seconds of the game, Russell Wilson threw a pass to the end zone to Golden Tate, who was deemed to have caught the ball. However, the NFL later acknowledged that Tate committed an uncalled offensive pass interference penalty prior to the catch.
NFL analyst Todd Fuhrman reacted by posting, “The league is worth billions and the most popular program on TV The fastest way to erode that level of enthusiasm with the consumer that’s more invested than ever because of gambling/fantasy? Actively choose to use replacement officials that aren’t the best at what they do.”
Former quarterback Kurt Benkert wasn’t entirely against the use of replacement refs, but he argued that there should be an extra layer of protection. He posted, “AI refs will be here before we know it, but in all seriousness, if we get replacement refs, they need to add in extra layers of booth reviews and challenges. Idc if the game flow is disrupted, just get the calls right.”

Contrarily, another former quarterback had a slightly different opinion. Chase Daniel posted, “I can’t believe we’re doing replacement refs again…”
The NFL is a multibillion-dollar entity and regarded as one of, if not the, wealthiest sports leagues in the world. The fact that the league can’t come to an agreement with the referees’ union is alarming.
