NFL Proposes Major Officiating Change That Signals the League Is Bracing for a Referee Strike

The NFL proposed centralized officiating changes to let the New York office assist on calls ahead of a potential referee strike.

Each NFL offseason, the league and its teams look for ways to improve the quality of play. One of the issues discussed this offseason is how to improve officiating. Each year, many egregious calls frustrate teams and fans alike.

It appears this offseason, the NFL competition committee is seeking ways to help officials make more accurate calls. One issue with the league’s proposal to change officiating is that officials may be headed for a strike. If that is the case, the league wants to be prepared to continue with the season, no matter who the referees are.

NFL Proposes Major Officiating Changes Ahead of Potential Referee Strike

The collective bargaining agreement between the NFL and the NFL Referees Association expires at the end of May. That means the 2026 season is in jeopardy of having replacement officials, like what happened in 2012.

If replacement refs are required, the NFL plans to have safeguards in place to ensure the correct calls are made, one way or another. According to Kevin Seifert, one potential rule change would allow the NFL Officiating Department to correct clear misses by on-field officials.

“By Competition Committee; for one year only, to allow the NFL Officiating Department to correct clear and obvious misses made by on-field officials that impact the game, in the event that there is a work stoppage involving the game officials represented by the NFL Referees Association,” the NFL’s proposal read.

Seifert said, “For the most part, members of the NFL staff in New York would be allowed to assist on player safety fouls.” Some of the calls that could be assisted on include player-safety fouls, such as roughing the passer, intentional grounding, and horse-collar tackling.

Many other rule changes were proposed this offseason by the NFL competition committee.

Tom Pelissero reported that some of the other rule changes being proposed are “to permit the kicking team to declare an onside kick at any time during the game, to eliminate the kicking team’s incentive to intentionally kick the ball out of bounds when kicking off from the 50-yard line, to modify the kickoff alignment requirements for the receiving team players in the setup zone.”

There will likely be plenty of changes to NFL officiating heading into 2026. While the referees may not love the idea of centralized officiating, it would benefit the league.

Officiating plays a significant role in every NFL game, and doing whatever it takes to get the calls right should be of the utmost importance.

There is still a lot to decide this offseason, but if the league is looking for ways to improve officiating, everyone should be on board
