NFL News and Rumors: Bills Unable To Add Star WR After Stefon Diggs Trade, Adam Schefter Says

The Buffalo Bills are in dire need of help at wide receiver after dealing Stefon Diggs, but Adam Schefter dampened rumors that they might add a big name.

The Buffalo Bills are in dire need of help at wide receiver after dealing Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans, further depleting an already thin position group. The move led to plenty of speculation as to which big-name receiver Buffalo might trade for or sign to replace Diggs, but Adam Schefter recently put a damper on those rumors.

Adam Schefter Says Buffalo Bills Can’t Acquire High-Priced WR

Schefter discussed the Bills’ wide receiver situation during Thursday’s episode of Get Up with host Mike Greenberg. Schefter touched on the oft-speculated divide that seemed to grow between Diggs and Buffalo as time went on.

Others have previously mentioned that Diggs evidently lost belief in the franchise and felt the Bills had missed their window to contend for a title, making his emotions on the matter evident.

It all amounted to an exit from Buffalo on Wednesday, starting a new era for both sides.

In the wake of the move, there has been plenty of speculation as to whether the Bills might look to add a proven veteran wide receiver in free agency, or even trade for a more proven option than what’s currently available on the roster.

Schefter dampened expectations of Buffalo making any big moves at the position, however.

“For the people saying ‘Buffalo should go out now and trade for a wide receiver, sign a high-priced wide receiver’ — they can’t afford to do it.”

Now that Diggs has been traded away and Gabe Davis signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars this offseason, Buffalo is down their top two receivers from 2023.

Tight end Dalton Kincaid is the top returner in receiving yards, while Khalil Shakir is the only notable returning wide receiver. Buffalo also signed Curtis Samuel to a three-year deal in free agency alongside adding Mack Hollins. KJ Hamler, Andy Isabella, Bryan Thompson, Justin Shorter, and Tyrell Shavers are among the other options on the depth chart.

The Bills could certainly look to supplement the room with a cheap free agent, but it seems most likely to make one or more additions in the NFL Draft.

Buffalo is set to pick 28th overall in the first round this year and could be inclined to spend that selection on one of the more highly regarded receivers in the class that remain when they are on the clock. Schefter certainly seems to think they will at least strongly consider that approach.

“They’re going to have to find economical, efficient ways to restock the wide receiver room, most notably through the draft,” Schefter said. “With all the talent in the first round of this draft, the Bills have to be considered somebody that’s going to take a long, hard look at wide receiver in Round 1.”

Time will tell what Buffalo does to supplement its thin receiving corps, but it’s clear additions are needed between now and the start of the season.
