NFL Insider Reveals Latest Update on Travis Kelce’s Retirement Speculation

Is Travis Kelce retiring in 2026? NFL Insider provides latest update on Chiefs TE's plans in the offseason and his playing status ahead.

NFL retirement speculation is a familiar subplot in February, and this year it centers on Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. At 36, Kelce is coming off a 6-11 season for the Chiefs in 2025 and is balancing a significant offseason away from the field, including his planned June wedding to Taylor Swift.

His future has been a frequent talking point around the league, but until now, there has been little concrete reporting beyond broad guesses. Fresh information from NFL insider Dianna Russini, shared during Super Bowl week in Northern California, offers the clearest picture yet of where things stand.

Is Travis Kelce Retiring in 2026? NFL Insider Drops Latest Update

The Athletic’s Russini spent the Super Bowl week in the Bay Area, where league figures gathered ahead of Sunday’s matchup between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots. As part of her broader notebook on storylines from San Francisco and Santa Clara, she provided the latest detailed glimpse into Kelce’s thinking about his future.

Russini reported that Kelce has been a visible presence at Super Bowl events in San Francisco, appearing at parties and functions as one of the league’s most recognizable stars. Her reporting emphasized that Kelce’s status remains unresolved but that conversations with people around him are beginning to shape expectations for 2026.

“Kelce was seen bouncing around San Francisco parties and events, even as the soon-to-be-married man’s next move remains uncertain. While retirement has been discussed, many close to him believe he could return for at least one more season. A final decision has yet to be made, but a 14th season is looking more real than ever,” she wrote.

That update aligns with the broader picture painted elsewhere around the league. Per other reports, Kelce genuinely has two options in front of him: step away after more than a decade with Kansas City or add at least one more year to a career widely regarded as one of the best ever by a tight end.

The context around the Chiefs adds another layer. Kansas City is coming off a 6-11 campaign in 2025, a sharp departure from the franchise’s recent Super Bowl contention. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a late-season torn ACL, and it is not yet clear from public reporting whether he will be ready for Week 1 of the 2026 season.

According to PFSN’s TE Impact Metric, Kelce finished the regular season as the 12th-best tight end in the league. His numbers prove that he can still play in the league, and the Chiefs would love to have him back.

It’ll be interesting to see whether this uncertainty is one of several football factors Kelce weighs as he considers whether to return.

What Russini’s insight makes clear is that no final call has been made. Retirement remains a topic of active discussion, but people close to Kelce increasingly see a continuation of his playing career as a realistic outcome. A 14th NFL season is now viewed, in Russini’s words, as “more real than ever,” even if the timing of an official announcement is unknown.

For now, Kelce’s situation sits where many high-profile careers often land at this stage: an accomplished veteran with an already secure legacy, significant life events on the horizon, and a decision that will shape both the Chiefs’ 2026 plans and the closing chapter of his time in the league.
