The Green Bay Packers looked headed for a split with former All-Pro cornerback Jaire Alexander this offseason. But that may be changing. Based on new insight from an NFL insider who spoke with head coach Matt LaFleur, Alexander is expected to stay in Green Bay.
Jaire Alexander Possibly Staying With Green Bay Packers
The last two seasons have been rough for Alexander, who’s had trouble staying healthy. In 2023, he played in just seven regular-season games and was in and out of the lineup.
It was more of the same in 2024—seven games played, seven passes defensed, and 10 games missed.
Tension with the team peaked late in the 2023 season when Alexander was suspended after a strange coin-toss moment against the Carolina Panthers. Even though he wasn’t a team captain, Alexander went out for the toss and forgot to say “defer” after calling it right. That gave Carolina the ball to start both halves.
General manager Brian Gutekunst suspended him for one game. Alexander later said he didn’t expect it.

LaFleur said the coin toss wasn’t the only reason for the suspension but didn’t go into details.
Between injuries, a suspension, and what looked like a strained relationship with the front office, Alexander’s $21 million-a-year deal looked like it might become another team’s problem. But those rumors may be slowing down.
According to ESPN’s Peter Schrager, who said he spoke with LaFleur at the 2025 NFL Draft, Alexander is likely staying with the Packers and is back on good terms with the front office.
“I talked to Matt LaFleur during draft week, and he said they’re in a good place with Jaire Alexander,” Schrager said.
“From what I gathered, this thing is in a lot better place than what was being presented in the media, and that there is a place for Jaire Alexander in Green Bay,” Schrager added. “He and Jeff Hafley actually have had a great relationship, and it’s a different breed and a different time.”
Even putting the injuries aside, Alexander’s contract is a concern. His cap hit in 2025 is $24.6 million—high for a player who hasn’t been available consistently. But ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler recently reported that the Packers are working to renegotiate the deal and factor in both his injury history and his long-standing status as a top-tier corner.
A trade is still possible, but Alexander’s talent has never been the issue. In 2024, Pro Football Focus gave him a 75.2 overall grade, with 57.8 in run defense and 78.3 in coverage. The Packers’ defense earned a 79.5 grade (C+) in PFSN’s Defense+ rankings.
In seven seasons with the Packers, Alexander has totaled 12 interceptions, three forced fumbles, 70 passes defensed, 1.5 sacks, and 287 tackles.
