‘Is He in a Good Space?’ — NFL Insider Poses Blunt Questions on Deshaun Watson’s Future After Booing From Fans

Jeremy Fowler raises doubts over Deshaun Watson’s Browns future after his rough preseason outing and tense comments about Cleveland fans.

The Cleveland Browns’ quarterback battle has reached a critical point.

ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler believes the Browns must evaluate more than Watson’s performance after his rough second half against the Buffalo Bills. His postgame comments about being booed by Cleveland fans have also raised questions about whether he is in the right mindset to lead the team.

Deshaun Watson’s Future in Doubt

Watson entered Saturday’s preseason game with some momentum after reportedly putting together several strong practices during joint sessions with Buffalo.

That momentum quickly disappeared.

Watson completed just 5 of 12 passes for 36 yards and threw an interception in the second half of Cleveland’s 31-7 loss. His performance was followed by a controversial press conference in which he called the fans’ reaction to him “disrespectful” and “personal.”

Fowler believes Cleveland now has to consider the bigger picture.

“Now, the Browns have to weigh what happened on the field of Watson and also what he said in that press conference,” Fowler said. “Is he in a good space to be the leader for this team?”

“So, here’s how this is going to go. Todd Monken, the head coach will huddle with his staff today. They will evaluate everything, the game yesterday and the last few weeks of the battle knowing that this is essentially over, a decision could come Monday where he informs both quarterbacks of his decision, whichever direction they go,” Fowler added.

The comments suggest the Browns’ decision may come down to more than simply comparing statistics between Watson and Sanders.

Sanders Continues to Build His Case

While Watson’s position has become more complicated, Shedeur Sanders continues to make a strong impression.

“When I talk to people with the Browns, the word presence, the word aura comes up like he has something to him that has certainly helped his cause and he played well yesterday. So he’s made a compelling case at the very least,” Fowler said about Sanders.

Sanders backed up that reputation on the field against Buffalo.

He completed his first eight passes and led an 11-play, 65-yard opening drive that ended with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Luke Floriea. He completed 81.8% of his passes during his first-half appearance.

That performance stood in sharp contrast to Watson’s struggles after halftime. However, Sanders is coming off a poor rookie season in which, according to PFN’s QB Impact Metric, he posted an impact score of 63.0, ranking second-worst among QBs.

For Todd Monken and the Browns’ front office, the decision is becoming increasingly difficult. Watson offers experience and a massive financial commitment, while Sanders represents a fresh start and appears to be gaining support through both his play and presence.

With the regular season approaching, Cleveland may soon have its answer.
