‘Created an Opening’ — NFL Insider Reveals How Brandon Aiyuk Drama Could Spark Stefon Diggs’ Dream Move

ESPN's Adam Schefter revealed that Brandon Aiyuk's antics might have opened the door for the Washington Commanders to sign Stefon Diggs.

Wide receiver Stefon Diggs has been beset by off-field legal issues, leading to his release by the New England Patriots in March. Despite being found not guilty of assault and battery charges in May, a fresh scandal has befallen the wide receiver after a social media influencer claimed that he had been allegedly drugged and sexually assaulted by the free agent.

Brandon Aiyuk’s Antics Open Door for Commanders’ Stefon Diggs Move

Despite his off-field issues, Diggs has been repeatedly linked with a move to the Washington Commanders. The Commanders have also been extensively linked with a move to sign polarizing San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who has been locked in a tense standoff with the team.

During Tuesday’s segment of the “Adam Schefter Podcast,” ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter revealed how Aiyuk’s antics could open the door for the Commanders to sign Diggs instead.

“He’s (Diggs) been training all offseason, didn’t need the rehab. You would think that you would get a better version of Stefon Diggs this offseason,” Schefter said. “And so, to me, I think there’ll be interest. By the way, we talked about Washington and Brandon Aiyuk, and most people thought Aiyuk would go there.

“And it may turn out to be that Brandon Aiyuk’s social media posts created an opening for Stefon Diggs, who played at Maryland, to go back to that area, take the spot that Brandon Aiyuk might’ve had, and now fill in. Again, the production was there last year, coming off an ACL injury. You’d have to think the production will be there this year. I think there are certain fits that would make sense for Stefon.”

After joining the Patriots from the Houston Texans, Diggs was a key cog in the offense that reached Super Bowl LX last season. He earned a PFN WR Impact score of 82.9, which ranked him No. 7 in the league after tallying 1,013 receiving yards on 85 catches, resulting in four touchdowns.

Aiyuk has grabbed headlines with his antics after the 49ers voided the guaranteed money in his contract after the wide receiver missed several mandatory rehabilitation sessions with their medical team last year. During the NFL offseason, Aiyuk has repeatedly called out the 49ers on social media and publicly angled for a move to the Commanders.

In 2023, before tearing his ACL and MCL, Aiyuk earned the fifth-highest PFN WR Impact score after registering 1,342 receiving yards on 75 receptions, resulting in seven touchdowns. His impressive form led the 49ers to award him a mammoth four-year, $120 million contract.
