NFL Free Agency Rumors: Jets Weighing Rarely Used Option to Keep Breece Hall

Jets weigh franchise or transition tag for Breece Hall as the March 3 deadline nears, with a long‑term deal looming.

The New York Jets enter another complicated offseason as they consider the future of cornerstone players drafted and developed under a previous regime. A significant decision now centers on their most productive offensive piece.

Jets Consider Transition Tag to Retain Breece Hall

Running back Breece Hall is at the center of the discussion. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that the Jets are weighing all options regarding Hall’s future, including the possibility of using the transition tag, a mechanism far less common than the traditional franchise tag.

“The Jets are weighing all options with Breece Hall’s future, including a tag and or an effort toward a long-term deal,” Fowler wrote. “Some inside league expect the transition tag for Hall, around $11.7 million, but that’s yet to be determined.”

With the NFL’s two-week franchise tag window now open, the Jets must decide Hall’s immediate future before the March 3 deadline, which falls one day after the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine ends. Teams are permitted to use only one franchise or transition tag per year. The new league year and free agency officially begin March 11.

The non-exclusive franchise tag for running backs is projected at about $14.5 million. That tag allows a player to negotiate elsewhere, but the original team can match any offer or receive two first-round picks as compensation. The exclusive franchise tag carries the same projected number but eliminates outside negotiation entirely.

The transition tag, projected at about $11.7 million, allows Hall to negotiate with other teams while giving the Jets the right of first refusal. Unlike the non-exclusive tag, there is no draft compensation if the Jets decline to match an offer sheet. That mechanism can also facilitate a sign-and-trade scenario if both sides determine a split is best.

Hall is No. 15 on PFSN’s Top 100 Free Agents list and the highest-ranked running back in the 2026 class. He surpassed 1,000 rushing yards for the first time in 2025 and has averaged 60.7 rushing yards per game across his career. Hall ranked No. 14 among backs in PFSN’s Running Back Impact Metric. He finished ninth among running backs with 350 receiving yards in 2025 and has 188 receptions in 56 career games.

What a Long-Term Deal Could Look Like for Hall

The running back market shifted significantly over the past two offseasons.

During the 2025 cycle, Saquon Barkley (Eagles) signed a two-year, $41.2 million extension with $36 million guaranteed, pushing the top of the market to $20.6 million per year. James Cook (Bills) agreed to a four-year, $46 million deal with $30 million guaranteed. Derrick Henry (Ravens) secured two years and $30 million with $25 million guaranteed, and Kyren Williams (Rams) landed a three-year, $33 million deal with $23 million guaranteed.

In the 2024 offseason, Josh Jacobs (Packers) signed a four-year, $48 million contract, which remains the largest total-value deal for a veteran running back.

Hall is younger than most of those players were at the time of their signings and offers similar three-down production. A long-term agreement for Hall would likely fall in the range of four years and $50 million to $55 million, with strong guarantees across the first two seasons.

By March 3, the Jets must either secure short-term control or allow Hall’s situation to move toward free agency on March 11. The decision will signal how the franchise plans to structure its future.
