‘In Need of a Hip Replacement,’ ‘Looks Painful’ — NFL Fans Worried About Jim Harbaugh’s Health After Chargers HC’s Viral Video

NFL fans question Jim Harbaugh’s health after a viral Chargers practice video draws concern over his movement.

Jim Harbaugh and Mike McDaniel have become one of the NFL’s intriguing coaching pairings, combining very different personalities and approaches to offensive football.

Their work together with the Los Angeles Chargers has already produced plenty of discussion as they prepare for the 2026 season. But a recent practice video drew attention for another reason, as viewers focused less on the football discussion and more on Harbaugh’s movement.

NFL Fans Question Jim Harbaugh’s Health After Viral Chargers Video

The video, posted by ESPN reporter Kris Rhim, shows Harbaugh and McDaniel deeply involved in a discussion about the mechanics of a quarterback handoff.

The two coaches go back and forth over the technique, reflecting the detailed approach they have brought to their new partnership. McDaniel is installing a timing-based offense built around deceptive similarities between RPOs, play-action concepts, and traditional runs, while Harbaugh continues to stress execution and ball security.

The football discussion, however, took a back seat on the viral X post.

One fan focused on Harbaugh’s movement and wrote, “Damn, Harbaugh in need of a hip replacement. Whole (expletive) alignment is off.”

Another brought up his history at Michigan, saying, “He had multiple operations on it at UM. It’s gotten way worse.”

Those comments were based on what fans believed they saw in the video, rather than any new medical information about Harbaugh. A third viewer suggested, “Sure looks like he needs surgery that would probably help him a lot.”

The speculation continued as another fan tried to identify the source of the apparent discomfort: “It’s either his right hip or knee. Looks painful.”

Harbaugh’s physical appearance has been part of his public image throughout his coaching career, but the clip prompted viewers to focus closely on how he walked and moved during the practice interaction.

One fan wrote, “He just looks like he hurts with every step.”

Another was even more direct: “Looks painful af.”

John G. Bronkhorst added his own assessment, writing, “Harbaugh out here moving like he’s 95 years old.”

A fan pointed to a possible knee issue, saying, “Looks like Harbaugh needs a right knee replacement. That leg looks pretty bowed.”

There is no injury diagnosis as of now about Harbaugh’s mobility issues, but the fans are concerned after what they saw during his football discussion with McDaniel. Harbaugh remains the Chargers’ head coach after returning to the NFL in 2024 following his successful run at Michigan, where he led the Wolverines to the 2023 national championship.

His current partnership with McDaniel is aimed at getting the most from Justin Herbert, with McDaniel calling plays and reshaping the Chargers’ offense. This makes their detailed practice work important heading into the season, even as this particular clip has generated a very different conversation among NFL fans.
