Quentin Johnston looked like he’d finally turned the corner. The Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver had put in the work all offseason, attacking his biggest weakness with relentless focus.
Then training camp started, and the same old problems came flooding back. One dropped pass later, and social media exploded with the kind of criticism that’s become all too familiar for the former first-round pick.
Fans Pile On Quentin Johnston After Another Dropped Pass
Johnston was a star with the TCU Horned Frogs, catching 115 passes for 2,190 yards and 14 touchdowns across three seasons. His best run came in 2022 when he had 60 catches for 1,069 yards and six scores as TCU made the College Football Playoff national title game before getting blown out by Georgia.
The Chargers selected Johnston 21st overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, but his first two seasons have been rough, mainly because of dropped passes.
At training camp, those drops returned once again for Johnston, and fans wasted no time piling on the receiver.

Keep in mind that this is only training camp, but it wasn’t a good start. Johnston ran a simple route and was wide open, yet the ball hit his hands and then hit the turf.
After the clip surfaced online, fans had all sorts of reactions.
“Worst hands the league oh my Kelvin Benjamin 2.0,” one person wrote.

“If this dude could just catch the ball he’d be a good wide receiver huh,” said another.
“Midseason form…and in the best shape of his life,” stated another. “When is the league gonna learn? If he not a natural hands catcher in college, he won’t be one in the league,” another pointed out.
“Think it’s time to throw in the towel on this dude,” another user said.
“Yeah he’ll have the left bench figured out all right,” another replied.
Another user even said Johnston should move to cornerback: “This guy should just play corner tbh great routes great speed and size but stone hands.”
This pattern isn’t new for Johnston. Johnston also caught heat in the 2024 season after some costly drops in the loss to the Baltimore Ravens, so this definitely isn’t the first time fans have voiced their frustration.
The numbers paint a clear picture of Johnston’s struggles. According to Pro Football Reference, he had seven drops in 2024 and three in 2023. That meant his drop rate was 7.7% in 2024, which is not what you want to see, especially from a first-round draft choice.
Adding to the pressure, the release of Mike Williams puts even more spotlight on the Chargers’ receiver room. Instances like these training camp drops don’t have fans pounding the table to give Johnston more opportunities.
It’s early in camp, but it has not been a great start for the former TCU star. For a player already fighting to prove himself, every drop carries extra weight as the 2025 season approaches.
