Cleveland Browns fans were already primed to dissect every word uttered about Shedeur Sanders. A Monday exchange involving Todd Monken and longtime beat reporter Mary Kay Cabot gave them another reason.
Cabot reported that rookie Taylen Green “could be” the active No. 2 quarterback behind Deshaun Watson and ahead of Sanders against Jacksonville. Monken did leave that possibility open, but the full exchange focused on whether Green could have a small package of plays and whether Cleveland would dress three quarterbacks.

Monken’s actual answer explains why the wording became the flashpoint. Asked about Green having a role Sunday, Monken said, “Could be. There could be a package where we have him.”
He later acknowledged that dressing three quarterbacks would be “a lot.” He did not announce a permanent depth-chart change, though.
But fans started dissecting the way Cabot presented it, as one said, “Mary Kay is deceptive.”

Another was even harsher. “You’re a terrible reporter,” the fan wrote bluntly. “CLICKBAIT. That’s not what he said,” another fan wrote.

A fourth reaction focused on the distinction between Green receiving a specialty package and actually moving ahead of Sanders on the quarterback depth chart.

Shedeur Sanders Remains at Center of Browns QB Debate
The strongest criticism came from a fan who wanted disciplinary action.
“The fact that Tony Grossi or other outlets aren’t picking up this biased report speaks volumes. Mary Kay should be suspended. Nobody can watch what Monken said and walk away from it (saying) Shedeur will be behind Green. If Watson gets hurt, they can’t play Green at QB. Mary Kay 🤡🤡🤡,” the fan wrote at length.

Cleveland’s quarterback picture explains why one sentence caused such a stir. Watson is the Week 1 starter, while Cleveland currently lists Sanders as his backup.

Green’s athleticism could justify a specialized package without necessarily making him the conventional QB2.

The Browns open against Jacksonville on Sunday. Until Cleveland releases its game-day inactives, Green’s role remains a possibility.
