Monday Night Football is here, and all eyes were supposed to be on the NFC North showdown between the Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings. Instead, a new topic is stealing the spotlight: the condition of Soldier Field’s turf.
Soldier Field’s Conditions Look Bad for MNF Game Between Bears and Vikings
The field has had a rough few days. Over Labor Day weekend, the stadium hosted five huge concerts: Oasis, My Chemical Romance, The Lumineers, System of a Down, and Avenged Sevenfold, all with fans on the grass. By the time the Bears were ready to practice for Week 1, the field looked more like a concert aftermath than an NFL-ready surface.

To fix things, crews rushed to lay fresh sod, but here’s the problem: new grass usually takes 10 to 14 days to root fully. Soldier Field’s turf has had just seven days. Even with sunlight and water, it’s not fully settled, far from the pristine field you’d expect for a primetime game.
Fans quickly noticed the conditions, and social media lit up the organization.
“That seems very unsafe,” one tweeted.
That seems very unsafe.

Others were harsher, criticizing the Bears organization for prioritizing concerts and money over player safety.
“What an absolute joke of an organization to not give themselves enough time after the concerts to get it done right and put player safety at risk,” the comment said.
Wow week 1 for the nfl season and the field isn’t ready, what an absolute joke of an organization to not give themselves enough time after the concerts to get it done right and put player safety at risk. The thing all these owners supposedly care so much about.

Some questioned whether the game should even happen.
“Ay man, not even rivalry smack talk, are you sure you want to risk your guys on this turf like that?” one fan asked.
@ChicagoBears, Ay man, not even rivalry smack talk – are you sure you want to risk your guys on this turf like that?

The worry isn’t just about looks. Uneven, unsettled grass can be dangerous, raising the risk of injuries right as the NFL season kicks off.
Others aren’t holding back: “What a joke of a field for NFL teams to play on,” wrote one.

Another added, “Should be ashamed of this field, it shows all they care about his money, not the quality of product, and certainly not player safety..”
@NFL @ChicagoBears should be ashamed of this field, it shows all they care about his money, not the quality of product, and certainly not player safety. This game should not happen tonight, not at the stadium, not ever on a field like this.

Will the Field Have Any Effect on Division Clash?
Now, all eyes will be on Soldier Field tonight. Will the turf survive the game? Could it affect the matchup between these division rivals? The excitement for the Bears-Vikings rivalry is real, but there’s an uneasy feeling that the field might steal the show for all the wrong reasons.
Fans, players, and coaches can only hope the game starts safely as kickoff draws near. Although Soldier Field has a lengthy history, this Week 1 matchup could go down in history for the wrong reasons if the surface doesn’t hold up.
