Cam Skattebo has built his reputation around an aggressive approach that makes him difficult to ignore on the football field. This style took a turn on Wednesday when a practice play involving the New York Giants running back triggered a heated confrontation with teammates.
The incident has now raised questions about where the line sits between playing with an edge and putting teammates at risk.
NFL Fans Turn on Cam Skattebo After Giants Practice Fight
The confrontation began when Skattebo made a late slide after catching a pass during the Giants’ final training camp practice.
Defensive backs Jevón Holland and Greg Newsome II objected because defenders were not allowed to deliver hard contact during the drill. The exchange between Skattebo and Newsome eventually became physical, though the players did not throw punches.
The confrontation came after an earlier incident involving Barnes. Skattebo had run over linebacker Zaire Barnes during a non-contact drill, which had already frustrated members of the defense.
Beat writer Pat Leonard reported that the latest incident had been coming for some time, and said Skattebo’s approach was wearing on his teammates.

Another fan had little patience for the running back’s conduct, writing, “‘Grown man with the brain of an 11-year-old brings disturbances to the team,’ Go figure.”

The criticism also brought up Skattebo’s position within the Giants organization. NFL analyst James Kratch asked, “Skattebo does realize they tried to replace him multiple times this offseason, right?”

Hail Mary Sports suggested Skattebo’s public image has changed, writing, “I hate to say it, but Skatt went from beloved to annoying and corny in record time.”

Head coach John Harbaugh addressed the incident after practice, pointing to Skattebo’s 15-yard penalty as an example of how his intensity can hurt the team when it goes too far.
“He got a 15-yard penalty at the end of practice. Did you see that? Yeah, it’s infectious. It can be infectious the other way, an infectious disease type of thing. We want it to be in a positive way,” Harbaugh said.
Skattebo, who was ranked 40th in PFN’s NFL RB Impact list and remains listed as the Giants’ starting running back. He is healthy after last year’s fractured tibia and ankle injury, but Harbaugh has not decided whether starters will play Friday against the New York Jets.
The Giants open the regular season Sept. 13 against the Dallas Cowboys.
