Beyond the athletes on the field and the coaches on the sidelines, NFL fans get to know the broadcasters who present the action and announce the game.
During the Week 4 game between the Minnesota Vikings and the Pittsburgh Steelers in Dublin, Ireland, fans’ focus was drawn away from the action for a brief period. As legendary broadcaster Pam Oliver delivered an update from the sidelines, her delivery and the report itself raised major question marks, drawing the concern of NFL fans.
Fans Worried About Pam Oliver
In the news industry for 40 years now, Oliver is the ultimate professional when it comes to reporting. Over the years, she has perfected the art form and is widely regarded as one of the greatest to ever do it based on her tenure.
This year, she will be inducted into the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame, with the committee stating, “She has long been recognized as one of the premier sports reporters on network television and is the longest tenured NFL sideline reporter.”
With the ceremony scheduled to take place on December 16, they added, “With widespread respect and admiration across the industry, her straightforward and candid interviewing style consistently delivers topical and substantive reports.”

That level of success and experience in the industry is what made her showing at the Dublin game all the more puzzling. Standing on the sidelines, she seemed to be slurring her words throughout her report.
The worst moment came when she mispronounced superstar wide receiver DK Metcalf’s name, before talking about how Metcalf hadn’t been involved in the offense recently. At that point, Metcalf led all players with 122 receiving yards and a touchdown in the first half.

Others had similar worries, with some noting the distinct change in how she conveys her reports.

For some fans, though, the mispronunciation of Metcalf’s name was the most obvious identifier that something wasn’t quite right.

“‘DK MANCalf’ – Pam Oliver,” one fan noted, before clarifying, “I think it was involuntary.”
Amid a legendary career that began in Albany, Georgia, for local television stations and expanded to the likes of ESPN and FOX, Oliver has more than earned the benefit of the doubt, especially when this is something she’s dealt with before as well and spoken extensively about.
Oliver’s History With Slurring
During an appearance on The Athletic’s Sports Media with Richard Deitsch, she spoke about the chronic migraines that have plagued her throughout her life. During a game in January 2021, the same slurring issues perked up for Oliver, causing people to take notice.
“Well, I’ve had several [migraines] over the course of the football season. For example, I’ve gone from averaging five or six a month down to averaging three a month. I consider that being lucky,” Oliver said. “They’re very debilitating for me. They’ve been a problem for a very, very long time.”
The situation, at various points in her career, got bad enough that the veteran broadcaster had to miss entire games because of the situation.

“It’s caused me to miss a few games over the span of my career because I just couldn’t take the noise and the light and the sickness that comes with that. The nausea and the vomiting,” she explained.
There have been times, though, when the migraine happens while she’s already at the game. In those situations, she has a special “cocktail of anti-inflammatory nausea medicine and a steroid” that helps her get through the game.
As she proudly declared: “I’ve fought through it more than I’ve failed getting through it during a football game.”
Knowing Oliver’s medical history, this is why fans immediately expressed concern when something didn’t seem right with the legendary broadcaster.
