Could Aaron Rodgers Be Holding Out for a Spot on the Minnesota Vikings?

Rodgers, a four-time MVP and Super Bowl champion, remains unsigned despite a standing offer from the Pittsburgh Steelers.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, some league insiders suspect Rodgers is holding out hope for a deal with the Vikings, viewing Minnesota as an “ideal scenario” due to head coach Kevin O’Connell’s offensive acumen and the team’s favorable schedule, which includes nine dome games per season.

“There’s some teams I’ve talked to that are still kind of wondering, ‘Is he just waiting out the Vikings?’” Fowler said during an appearance on the Dan Patrick Show. “The Vikings would be an ideal scenario: one of the best play callers in the league in Kevin O’Connell, nine dome games — you’re guaranteed nine dome games per year — but checking with the Vikings, I still don’t expect that. They’re moving forward with J.J. McCarthy, so he really has no other option other than Pittsburgh or retire right now.”

Earlier in the offseason, reports indicated mutual interest between Rodgers and the Vikings, especially after Minnesota lost last season’s starter, Sam Darnold, in free agency. However, the Vikings have since committed to McCarthy, their 2024 first-round pick, as their quarterback of the future.

If Mike Tomlin is seriously considering bringing Rodgers into his locker room, ESPN’s Michael Wilbon has a message for him: Don’t.

“They’re making a mistake if they let him anywhere near their building,” Wilbon said on “Get Up,” pulling no punches when asked about Pittsburgh’s continued flirtation with Rodgers.

The Steelers didn’t just let him near the building — they welcomed him in as Rodgers visited the team on March 21, fueling speculation that a deal might be in the works. While no contract emerged, it confirmed Pittsburgh’s interest.

Since then, Rodgers has cited personal reasons for the delay in his decision, and with OTAs underway, insiders like Mark Kaboly have pointed to June’s mandatory minicamp as a more realistic signing window.

Rodgers’ delay in signing with the Steelers has fueled speculation that he is waiting to see if the Vikings reconsider their quarterback plans. However, team sources maintain that Minnesota is focused on developing McCarthy, leaving Rodgers with limited options as mandatory minicamps near.

The Steelers, meanwhile, remain hopeful Rodgers will join them, but uncertainty persists as the veteran quarterback weighs his next move.
