NFL Draft Rumors: Will Rueben Bain Jr.’s Stock Plummet After Bombshell Report Detailing Fatal Car Crash?

A bombshell report revealed that Rueben Bain Jr. was involved in a fatal traffic collision in 2024. Will this impact the Hurricanes star's NFL Draft stock?

On Sunday afternoon, a bombshell report revealed that Miami Hurricanes star Rueben Bain Jr. was involved in a fatal traffic collision in March 2024.

On March 17, 2024, Bain struck another car on Interstate 95 in Miami “before careering into concrete barriers on both sides of the highway.” One of the four passengers in Bain’s car, Destiny Betts, suffered severe injuries that caused her to enter a coma and tragically pass away three months later. Bain, a sophomore at the time, was cited for careless driving and the charge was later dismissed.

Will This New Information Impact Rueben Bain Jr.’s NFL Draft Stock?

This information came to light in an article by Oliver Connolly of The Read Optional. In the piece, multiple league sources “confirmed they are aware of the incident and are continuing to investigate.” One league source predicted that it could impact Bain’s draft stock.

“It doesn’t feel like [Bain] has been transparent with us,” a league source told The Read Optional. Another team executive added: “We are concerned about multiple incidents. We are waiting for the other shoe.”

However, CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones reported that teams “have been satisfied with Bain’s explanation” and “most have considered the matter handled.”

It’s worth noting that Betts’ family has described this as “a tragic accident” in a statement to The Read Optional: “While the loss remains incredibly painful for our family, we have worked hard to find peace and move forward. At this time, we are not seeking public attention surrounding this tragedy and respectfully request that our family’s privacy be honored. We also wish Mr. Bain the best as he continues his life and career.”

So, will this tragic incident affect Bain’s draft stock?

Bain is currently the No. 6 player on PFSN’s 2026 NFL Draft big board. His average draft position in PFSN’s NFL Mock Draft Simulator is 6.6, while his user ADP is 8.1. PFSN’s NFL Draft analyst Ian Cummings weighed in on how this might impact Bain going forward.

“It remains to be seen whether or not this previously unreported incident regarding Bain will affect his stock. There were no legal ramifications save for a citation for reckless driving that was eventually dismissed,” Cummings said. “If the assertions of the report are true, Bain’s negligence reportedly led to the harm of others, but the family of the deceased passenger has long since chosen not to pursue additional civil litigation.

“This is an incident that, in itself, has no ongoing implications. That said, it is also quoted that some NFL entities feel Bain hasn’t been entirely transparent about the incident. Others have reportedly been satisfied by his explanation, but it will likely be case-by-case. In a class that lacks top-end talent at premium positions, Bain likely has some inbuilt security with his stock. As long as a good chunk of teams feel satisfied with how he’s handled issue-specific questions, he can only fall to a certain point in Round 1.”

Bain’s NFL Draft Projection and Scouting Report

Here is Cummings’ scouting report and NFL Draft projection for Bain, courtesy of PFSN’s NFL Mock Draft Simulator:

Bain Jr. has been a disruptive defender for as long as he’s been on the college football circuit. After joining the Hurricanes as a four-star recruit, Bain racked up 7.5 sacks, 13 tackles for loss, and three forced fumbles in his true freshman campaign. Bain’s sophomore season was less productive due to a calf injury, but he returned to form as a legitimate game-wrecker at his best in 2025. He earned All-American honors in the process of accruing 8.5 sacks, 13 TFLs, and a strong PFSN EDGE Impact score of 82.7.

At 275 pounds, Bain has a rare body type for the position, with elite compact mass and natural leverage, and he’s an explosive long-track accelerator with awesome raw hand power. With his power and raw strength, Bain can sledge through tackles and overwhelm 1-on-1 as a pass-rusher, but he also has the hyper-elite sturdiness to absorb combo and duo blocks in the run game, and sets an edge with unflinching consistency.

While power is Bain’s primary mode, he has a deep pass-rush bag and smooth upper-lower synergy, superb strength, IQ, and pursuit range in run defense, and surprising flexibility as a finisher. There has been talk of him potentially transitioning to DT in the NFL, but he fits best as an alignment-versatile EDGE, where he can use extended runways to channel power. In that role, Bain can be a plus starter and situational game-wrecker in the NFL similar to how he was in college.

It remains to be seen how this will affect Bain, but this is certainly a situation worth monitoring.
