Roger Goodell is staying in the NFL’s top chair, and the reaction from the football world is anything but unanimous. The league announced on Sunday that its commissioner has agreed to a four-year extension.
NFL World Has Split Opinions on Roger Goodell
Goodell has spent two decades running the league after replacing Paul Tagliabue in 2006. His latest extension will keep him in office till March 31, 2031.
However, social media immediately split over whether that is great news or a four-year headache. Goodell’s longevity alone has become a major talking point, with one account on X joking, “We still get to boo him at the draft!!!”

Others were even more skeptical about what another Goodell contract could mean for the NFL’s future. “Go get us that 18th game, Roger,” Aaron Nagler wrote on X.
Trey Wingo argued that his new deal lining up with the current CBA expiration was no accident. “Translation? We trust you to get what we want… an 18th regular season game,” he posted on X.

The commissioner has plenty of defenders too. Garrett Greenlee admitted, “I feel like this isn’t the popular thing to say but he’s really good for the NFL…”
He added that supporters might only appreciate his tenure after he leaves if the league takes a downturn.

Another account on X wrote, “Most overhated commish in sports.”
Ian Cameron pointed to Goodell’s business impact, saying he has helped make the NFL “as big and popular as ever.”
He wrote, “He has made the NFL owners a (expletive) ton of $$. The NFL is as big and popular as ever with TV ratings that are astronomical compared to the other three major sports in North America. Roger Goodell decides when he is done as NFL commissioner. It really is that simple.”

Brett Kollmann lauded the league’s stability regarding the commissioner position.
“One could argue that the stability of the NFL’s leadership is one of the main reason it’s grown to be one of this country’s largest cultural pillars,” Kollman wrote on X. “The league has only had three commissioners since Eisenhower was President (that’s a real stat, I’m not kidding).”

During Goodell’s tenure, NFL team valuations have exploded. The Vikings, the final franchise sold before he took over, went for $600 million. On the contrary, the Seahawks recently fetched a record $9.612 billion. The league is also playing nine international games this season as part of its global footprint expansion strategy.
New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, chairman of the compensation committee, called the owners “very fortunate to have Roger at the helm for the next four years.” Goodell’s new deal is also heavily tied to results, according to Kraft.
“Throughout the negotiation process, the Committee worked closely with an independent third-party compensation consultant and outside counsel to structure a deal that aligns Roger’s compensation with the League’s long-term interests and success,” Kraft noted.
“More than 95% of the total compensation” is connected to his performance and the NFL’s performance against various measures. The extension also carries Goodell through the current broadcast agreements and expires alongside the league’s CBA in 2031.
