NFL Announces Decision on Jauan Jennings After 49ers WR’s Controversial Incident With Tre’von Moehrig

The NFL announced their decision on the Jauan Jennings-Tre’von Moehrig on-field altercation during the 49ers vs. Panthers MNF clash in Week 12.

Handshake lines are supposed to be where the battle ends, but Monday night at Levi’s Stadium was a different story. After a physical game wrapped up, the cameras caught San Francisco 49ers receiver Jauan Jennings taking a swing at Carolina Panthers safety Tre’von Moehrig, sparking a chaotic scene on the field.

The NFL wasted no time reviewing the tape, and on Tuesday, the league handed down a split verdict that leaves one player sidelined and the other with a lighter wallet.

What Happened Between Jauan Jennings and Tre’von Moehrig?

While San Francisco was protecting a 20-9 lead late in the fourth quarter, broadcast angles captured Moehrig delivering a low blow to Jennings. The receiver immediately looked to the officials for a flag but managed to hold his composure before the next snap.

The tension didn’t evaporate with the clock, however. Once the game ended, cameras showed Jennings landing an open-handed strike to Moehrig’s helmet during the postgame handshakes.

This sparked a brief scuffle on the field, forcing teammates and staff from both sidelines to jump in and separate the players.

Following a review of the footage and game reports, the NFL decided Tuesday that Jennings will face a fine rather than a suspension. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan didn’t mince words about the initial incident, calling Moehrig’s late-game punch a “cheap shot.”

Meanwhile, Jennings explained his reaction by saying he was “responding to some childish behavior.” This ruling means San Francisco’s receiver rotation stays intact for Week 13, while Jennings awaits the final dollar amount for his penalty. Currently, the 49ers rank 28th on PFSN’s Defense Impact (DEFi) metrics with a grade of D.

How Will the Suspension Impact the Panthers’ Defense?

The consequences are heavier for Carolina, as the league announced a one-game suspension without pay for Moehrig due to the strike to the groin area. The safety is reportedly appealing the decision. Under the collective bargaining agreement, his case will be heard by one of the jointly appointed hearing officers: Derrick Brooks, Ramon Foster, or Jordy Nelson.

If the appeal fails, Moehrig will miss Carolina’s upcoming home game against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 13. The team noted that Moehrig is also dealing with an ankle issue and is considered day-to-day, but this suspension is strictly disciplinary. NFL Insider Tom Pelissero clarified the distinction on X:

“The NFL will review Jauan Jennings’ actions for a possible fine. But only Tre’von Moehrig will be suspended.”

This split decision gives both teams a clear direction as they prepare their active lists and special teams units for the short week. For Carolina, the focus shifts to adjusting the secondary without a key starter, while San Francisco moves forward with their full receiving corps. The final resolution on Moehrig’s appeal and Jennings’ fine amount will be determined through the league’s standard review process.
