‘Save Him From Himself’ — Ex-NFL QB Breaks Down Why Chiefs Must Hold Back ‘Obsessive’ Patrick Mahomes

What's the situation with Patrick Mahomes at the Chiefs? Find out more about the QB's approach to preseason training, despite his injury.

The Kansas City Chiefs have a miserable 2025 season to come back from, and no one seems to be more fired up than their superstar quarterback, Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs missed the playoffs for the first time in a decade last season, and to keep the dynasty alive, they’d have to make another deep playoff run again next season.

Chris Simms Weighs In on Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes’ Desire To Play Despite ACL Rehab

The Chiefs’ front office has done a solid job of filling clear needs this offseason, such as adding Super Bowl MVP running back Kenneth Walker III. Now, Mahomes feels the duty of carrying his own weight, and he’s shown it by participating in the team’s voluntary preseason workouts.

Former NFL quarterback Chris Simms, on his recent appearance on the “Pro Football Talk,” however, believes it’s vital that the Chiefs take things slowly with their franchise field general. His ambition may be strong, but it shouldn’t weigh too heavily on his knee.

“They gotta be careful with him,” Simms said. “He’s a workaholic. He’s obsessive, compulsive, like we talked about — gym rat, as they always say there in Kansas City. So this is a situation where they gotta save him from himself a little bit, and to take it slow, because he is the kind of guy, the kind of personality, just like all the great QBs, ‘I wanna get out there,’ and that’s the way he’ll be.”

The legendary Tom Brady was famous for his ‘workaholic’ drive when it came to preparing for the season and games in general. With Mahomes having won three Super Bowls before the age of 29, he recorded 90.4 PFSN QB Impact in 2022. It’s no surprise that he shares that drive with Brady.

“So they gotta calm that down, and in the meantime, get healthy, throw the football on the side, continue to move, and do drills,” Simms added. “They’ll probably get him in there with 7-on-7 and stuff with limited people around to be careful.”

The Chiefs also signed the mobile Justin Fields this offseason to shore up the QB room. Given Mahomes’s past injury scares, it’s understandable that Reid would want someone on hand with league starting experience.

“The great thing is, they got a guy, Justin Fields, who’ll get some extra reps because Mahomes won’t do everything,” Simms said. “That’ll help him out to get used to the Chiefs’ offense and Andy Reid, and the coaching there, and everything behind that… We expect Mahomes on the field in Week 1. It’s just, ‘Will he be 100%?'”

Kansas City will be back for vengeance next season, and it’ll be fascinating to see how Mahomes’s fire translates to season success.
