Few NBA agents have faced as much heat from fans this offseason as Jonathan Kuminga’s representative, Aaron Turner. Ever since Kuminga agreed to a two-year, $12.4 million contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Turner has been under intense scrutiny.
Turner’s latest attempt to explain the reasoning behind Kuminga’s agreement with the Wolves has once again sparked a strong reaction from fans.

Since Kuminga finalized his move to Minnesota, his agent has repeatedly addressed the decision in multiple interviews.
In an exclusive interview with Kevin O’Connor of Yahoo Sports, Turner once again broke down the financial reasoning behind Kuminga accepting the Wolves’ deal and argued that the contract’s value should not be judged solely by its guaranteed money.
“If you look at the math right now,” Turner said. “If he would have taken the two plus one deal, he’d be 18 million down from this year, but he would also secure 6.5 million more for next year.”

“So he’s really only down 11 and a half million in guaranteed money,” Turner continued. “And the two-year concept would have had a team option, this has a player option. A lot of people will tell you a player’s option is between 10 and 15 million. It’s hard to exactly value it, but there is a big value to a player option.”
Turner’s argument centered on the flexibility attached to Kuminga’s new contract. While the deal may appear less lucrative compared with other options available, the 23-year-old’s agent believes the player option gives the player more control over his career.
Still, Turner’s latest explanation did little to calm the criticism surrounding the deal. Instead, fans questioned both the contract itself and Turner’s decision to repeatedly defend it publicly.

“I’ve legit never seen an agent go on multiple podcasts to explain how they didn’t [expletive] up. Second straight summer he’s done this. worst agent in the NBA. not close,” one fan slammed.

The Los Angeles Lakers, Chicago Bulls, and Portland Trail Blazers were reportedly among the teams showing interest in Kuminga. The Lakers, in particular, made a strong push for him with a more attractive offer.

“Why does Turner keep doing these interviews? Can’t he see they are NOT going well?” one observer noted.
“Is he on drugs, or just straight up an idiot?” a fan wrote.
The criticism has not come exclusively from fans. Shortly after Kuminga agreed to the deal with Minnesota, Gilbert Arenas mocked the agreement by referring to it as “a podcast deal” while also taking aim at his agent.
So far, flexibility and a long-term outlook have played a role in Kuminga’s decision. Rather than maximizing his guaranteed earnings immediately, he is betting on securing a starting role with a Western Conference contender to increase his value before returning to the free agent market.
If Kuminga can thrive in Minnesota and take another step forward as a player, the decision could ultimately pay off with a significantly larger contract down the road.
However, if that expected breakthrough fails to materialize, the decision could become much harder to defend.
