Jaylen Brown enters the 2026-27 season with something to prove after the stunning blockbuster offseason move that sent him from the Boston Celtics to the Philadelphia 76ers.
After spending his entire NBA career in Boston and emerging as the team’s primary option last season, Brown will now have a new opportunity in Philly alongside some of the Eastern Conference’s biggest stars.

Brown made his mindset clear during a recent stream, revealing that he plans to approach the upcoming season with a particularly aggressive mentality.
“My mentality this year is to kill. I want blood this year. That’s the mentality,” Brown said.
Last season, Brown took on a larger role in Boston following Jayson Tatum’s Achilles injury in the 2025 playoffs.

With Tatum sidelined, Brown became the focal point of the Celtics’ offense while continuing to provide his usual impact defensively. He averaged 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game, with his scoring average ranking fourth in the NBA.
The former third overall pick in 2016 was also selected to his fifth All-Star team and earned All-NBA Second Team honors for the second time in his career. Those numbers came while Brown carried a significantly greater offensive burden, making his subsequent trade from Boston even more surprising.
The Celtics ultimately traded Brown to Philadelphia as part of an effort to gain financial flexibility under the NBA’s restrictive salary-cap rules.
For Brown, the surprising development creates a different challenge. Rather than the Celtics running it back with him alongside Tatum, he now has the opportunity to establish himself as a central figure on the 76ers.
This Philadelphia team is built to compete for a championship this season after also adding LeBron James in free agency to put alongside homegrown stars in Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid.
The pairing of Brown and James gives the 76ers two experienced wings who have already won championships, while Maxey provides another three-level scoring threat, and Embiid remains one of the league’s most dominant players when healthy.
Philadelphia now has four established offensive weapons, with Brown potentially taking on a major two-way role within the group.
The change in environment could also provide Brown with added motivation.
Boston’s decision to build around Tatum means Brown will now have to face his former team as a member of a conference rival. His comments suggest he intends to embrace that challenge rather than shy away from it.
Philadelphia will be counting on that edge as it attempts to turn its star power into postseason success.
