LeBron James has the NBA world on hold as he chooses his next team. His free-agency decision could shift the balance of power in either conference, but based on the latest update from his agent, Rich Paul, it doesn’t sound like he’s close to making a decision.
LeBron James’ Free-Agency Decision Continues to Drag Out
James’ former Los Angeles Lakers teammate Patrick Beverley claimed that the 41-year-old would be announcing his decision with his new squad on Monday.
“Rumor has it Bron makes his decision today!!! 👀,” Beverley posted on social media.
Roughly 24 hours later, the 12-year NBA veteran tweeted, “Can’t believe that source lied to me man 🤦🏾♂️.”
So, when will James announce his next team? It may not be anytime soon. Paul recently told ESPN’s Shams Charania that there’s “no timetable on a decision,” according to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.
“ESPN’s Shams says just now that he spoke to Rich Paul this morning and there’s no decision by LeBron and no timetable on a decision. Shams said his understanding is focus remains on Heat, Cleveland, Philadelphia,” Jackson wrote on X.
This lines up with what Paul said on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Tuesday, asking people for patience as James makes up his mind.
“Just have a little patience with him. Obviously, it’s his choice… This is a very important choice for him and you cannot rush it. I think he’s earned the right to not be rushed,” Paul stated.
“It’s not a thing where you’re toying with people’s emotions… This man has a very important, layered decision to make across business, across family, across basketball. You just have to be patient with him.”

Paul, the founder and CEO of Klutch Sports Group, recently dismissed anybody who thinks they know what James will do or when he will announce his decision. In fact, Paul has insisted that even he doesn’t know what James will do.
“None of these people know anything… and I say that respectfully because we haven’t made it to where anybody knows anything…” Paul said. “We’re not going to allow someone else to decide when he makes that decision… From a business perspective, if you were making a choice between high-level jobs, nobody would rush you.”

Paul could be subtly responding to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver with these comments. Last week, Silver stated that he wants James to announce his decision because it affects the 2026-27 NBA schedule.
“I would like him to make his announcement already… Teams are calling us, the networks are calling us, and everybody wants to lock in the schedule,” Silver said.
The Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers have been strong candidates since the start of this process. James brought each of these franchises at least one championship in the 2010s and a reunion makes sense. Meanwhile, the Philadelphia 76ers vaulted up James’ list after trading for Jaylen Brown and emerging as top contenders in the Eastern Conference.
