‘Real but Conditional Interest’ — Raptors Insider Predicts Toronto’s Best Trade Offer for Kawhi Leonard

The Toronto Raptors have become a potential destination for Kawhi Leonard, but several hurdles stand in the way of a blockbuster deal.

Los Angeles Clippers star Kawhi Leonard has been tied to several playoff teams already, as the Clippers could reportedly put the two-time Finals MVP on the trade block should they fail to reach an agreement for an extension.

The Toronto Raptors have emerged as a potential landing spot for the veteran forward, though a deal would likely involve several hurdles that could complicate any move.

Raptors Linked to Kawhi Leonard, but Major Obstacles Remain

As Leonard enters the final year of the 3-year, $149,505,800 contract, Jake Fischer of “The Stein Line” reported that the Raptors have interest in Leonard.

Longtime Raptors beat reporter Michael Grange of Sportsnet outlined what he believes to be the “most likely construction” of a potential trade package, which would center around Brandon Ingram heading to Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, Raptors insider Josh Lewenberg also weighed in on the discussion in a series of posts on X.

“The Raptors’ interest in Kawhi was described to me as ‘real but conditional.’ Contingent on price, obviously. Hard to see them paying more than last time, so think similar framework: secondary star (Ingram), former lottery pick (Dick), 1st-rounder in the following year’s draft,” Lewenberg wrote.

Lewenberg reported that one of the biggest sticking points in any negotiations would likely be the draft compensation.

Given Leonard’s age (35), his lengthy injury history, and the league’s lottery odds, Toronto would likely insist on including first-round picks that would be “in the not-so-distant future (2027 or 28).”

On the other hand, the Clippers would prefer a much more distant first-round selection with greater upside. Lewenberg also cautioned that it is unclear whether Los Angeles’ interest in moving Leonard is genuine.

Citing the philosophy of the front office, Lewenberg noted that it was unlikely Toronto would trade valuable first-round draft capital in a single deal.

Meanwhile, CBS Sports’ Sam Quinn also brought up another financial obstacle, writing, “A Kawhi-Raptors note to keep in mind: Toronto is currently only around $5.3 million below the first apron. Sending out less money than you take back triggers a first-apron hard cap. They can’t really deal with that. So any trade almost certainly has Toronto sending out more $.”

Another potential landing spot emerged with reports that newly appointed Dallas Mavericks president Ujiri is interested in reuniting with Leonard.
