James Harden is returning to the Cleveland Cavaliers on a new three-year, $97 million contract. After declining his $42.3 million player option, the veteran guard has agreed to sign with the Cavaliers on a lower annual salary.
The move gives Harden longer-term financial guarantees while giving the Cavaliers more flexibility to build a roster capable of contending for the NBA championship.

As part of the new contract, Harden will also have a player option and a trade kicker. The 37-year-old joined the Cavaliers at the trade deadline in February and helped the franchise reach the Eastern Conference finals last season.
NBA insider Shams Charania shared the details of Harden’s new contract and revealed that it would take his career earnings to over $500 million.
“Harden’s career earnings will now reach $511 million, making him the fourth player in NBA history to eclipse the $500 million mark, joining the 76ers’ LeBron James, the Rockets’ Kevin Durant and the Warriors’ Stephen Curry… He will become the second player in league history to sign for over $90 million in guaranteed salary at age 37 or older, with LeBron being the other,” Charania wrote on X.

Despite his strong performances during the regular season, Harden received criticism for failing to find the next gear in the playoffs as the Cavaliers were swept by the New York Knicks.
