Yahoo Sports’ Kevin O’Connor sent shockwaves across the NBA on Sunday with his report that the Golden State Warriors are angling to add LeBron James and Anthony Davis to their Stephen Curry-led core.

Warriors Eyeing to Reunite Ex-Lakers Teammates LeBron James, Anthony Davis in the Bay Area

James’ impending free agency remains one of the league’s premier storylines, with recent reporting indicating the 22-time All-Star could be “more likely than not” to leave the Los Angeles Lakers.

According to O’Connor, Golden State is aiming to make itself an even more appealing destination for James, should he ultimately seek greener pastures, by trading for Davis, his former Lakers co-star.

“There’s a moment in every aging franchise when the studio starts adding famous old faces to the poster, and nostalgia starts doing all of the work. That is, apparently, the offseason plan for the Golden State Warriors,” O’Connor wrote.

“The Warriors are attempting to trade for [Washington] Wizards big Anthony Davis and then sign Lakers free agent forward LeBron James, according to multiple league sources. A trade for Davis would have to include Jimmy Butler, who is on an expiring $57 million contract while recovering from a torn ACL. The Warriors would also have to include draft capital — they have two future firsts and four first-round swaps to work with in any deal.

“Sources say the Warriors hope adding Davis would help lure LeBron from Los Angeles to the Bay Area once free agency officially opens on June 30. The pitch would be simple: reunite with AD, team up with Steph Curry and Draymond Green, play for Steve Kerr, and chase one more championship with a roster of legends.”

James and Davis played five and a half seasons together, famously capturing the 2020 NBA title in their first year as teammates. While James has since taken a slight step back and Davis is coming off an injury-derailed 2025-26 campaign, the star duo would add much-needed versatility to the Warriors’ frontcourt.

James would be able to facilitate for Curry, the league’s all-time most prolific 3-point shooter, and serve as a complementary scoring option, while Davis would provide Golden State with the imposing two-way interior presence it has long been lacking. Meanwhile, as O’Connor pointed out, the seasoned trio and Warriors coach Steve Kerr have experience together, having captured Olympic gold with Team USA in 2024.

The mere possibility of such a nostalgia-fueled, star-studded roster triggered strong reactions from the NBA community on X.

“COULD YOU IMAGINE? STEPH, DRAYMOND, LEBRON, AD. Chills,” Sleeper Hoops exclaimed.

“I will never mock aggressively trying to get better + aiming high. Warriors have been targeting AD for years, going back to when he was in New Orleans, the LeBron rumors persist. Pretty interesting,” Lakers supporter Daman Rangoola wrote.

“Call me crazy, but a starting lineup of Stephen Curry, De’Anthony Melton, LeBron James, Draymond Green, and Anthony Davis would feed generations. Brandin Podziemski, Yaxel Lendeborg, Kristaps Porziņģis, Al Horford, Gui Santos is a strong bench. Don’t sleep on this team,” Last Word On Sports’ Frederick Okocha predicted.

“I’m sorry, but LeBron on the Warriors would be absolutely disgusting, and I’m sure he’d fall on many people’s GOAT lists whether he wins or loses,” Lakers Daily pushed back.

“LMAOOOO, DUB NATION STILL COPING FROM 2023,” Lakers Lead quipped.

Despite Golden State’s ambitious offseason approach, O’Connor noted that it faces clear roadblocks to achieving such a league-altering shake-up, most notably persuading Washington to part with Davis, who has yet to play a single game for the franchise. The Warriors would also have to convince James to take a sizable pay cut, likely around the mid-level exception.

Regardless, Golden State appears to be exploring every possible avenue to maximize the remainder of Curry’s prime after its underwhelming 37-45 finish this past season.
