NBA World Pays Tribute to Chris Paul After Recent Retirement Decision

Legendary point guard Chris Paul shocked the NBA by announcing his retirement right before the start of All-Star Weekend, spurring tributes across the league.

As the Los Angeles Clippers prepare to host NBA All-Star Weekend, it’s almost poetic in some ways that arguably the greatest player in franchise history decided this was the right time to announce his next chapter.

On Friday, 12-time All-Star Chris Paul announced on social media that he is officially retiring. While Paul’s farewell season with the Clippers turned into a nightmare, there have already been multiple tributes to one of the best floor generals of all time.

NBA Community Honors Chris Paul

Popular social media account NBA Central wrote “One of the greatest floor generals to ever touch a basketball. Shoutout to Chris Paul on a legendary, era defining career. The point god set the standard for leadership, precision, and winning basketball. Absolute legend.”

Paul is almost unanimously recognized as one of the best true points guards of all time, though his critics often point to his failure to win a championship as ultimately hurting his standing at the top of the sport.

Others often bring up his notable clashes with teammates, coaches, and opposing players throughout his career as another mark against his greatness.

StatMuse broke down the numbers behind Paul’s career, while saying “Top.. PG in NBA history.”

Legion Hoops praised Paul’s leadership abilities, specifically citing his mentorship of reigning league MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

Legion Hoops said “Chris Paul’s impact can’t be understated. Traded to the Thunder, bought in, and mentored a young SGA.. look how that turned out. The definition of moving the game forward.”

NBA insider Brett Siegel also paid tribute, saying “What a career for Chris Paul, one of the greatest points guards in basketball history: undoubtedly a first-ballot Hall of Famer.”

Paul’s 21st and final season in the NBA didn’t go as planned, as he averaged 2.9 points per game in limited action before being sent home early last December following strong disagreements with the Clippers coaching staff.

Paul was then traded to the Toronto Raptors earlier this month and was waived.

Regardless of how his career concluded, Paul’s legacy is secure as a member of the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team, as well as a 10-time top-10 finisher in Most Valuable Player Award voting.
