Giannis Antetokounmpo’s arrival in the Miami Heat has added another major contender to a deep and competitive Eastern Conference, with the franchise now boasting one of the league’s physically imposing new-look cores.
The move could also make life more difficult for the defending Eastern Conference champions, as Hall of Famer Jason Kidd believes the New York Knicks will have to deal with Miami’s revamped roster.
Jason Kidd Warns Knicks About Miami Heat’s New-Look Core
Kidd believes the Knicks will have their hands full with the Heat next season, particularly after Miami paired Antetokounmpo with longtime star big Bam Adebayo.
“So I think Miami are a team in the East (to watch out for). I think the East has gotten better — the Knicks will have their work cut out for them next season,” Kidd said during an interview in the Philippines.
After 13 years with the Bucks, which included a championship-winning run in 2021, Antetokounmpo made his blockbuster move to Miami earlier in the offseason. He now enters a new chapter alongside Adebayo, giving the Heat two All-Star-caliber big men capable of impacting games on both ends of the floor.

Kidd sees their partnership as one of the biggest reasons the Heat could become a factor in the East. “So I think him and Bam — it’s an incredible tandem,” Kidd mentioned.
The former NBA point guard, known for his time with the Suns, Nets, and Mavericks, also believes Miami’s organizational structure could help maximize the pairing.
“When you talk about Miami and the culture, it starts with their ownership but we also talk about Spo, who is one of the best coaches in the NBA,” Kidd said.
Erik Spoelstra has been Miami’s head coach since 2008 and has led the franchise to two NBA championships. His experience could become particularly valuable as the Heat attempt to integrate Antetokounmpo into a system built around Adebayo.
The Miami Heat ‘culture’ is widely perceived as influential across the league for having its players adapt to it, built on absolute physical conditioning and collective buy-in as a team under the legendary Pat Riley.
Kidd also noted Miami’s addition of former all-star guard Klay Thompson to the mix, giving the Heat another established perimeter shooter to complement their frontcourt stars.
Thompson’s presence gives Miami a player capable of bending defenses and creating more room for Antetokounmpo to operate around the basket.
The additions come at a time when the Eastern Conference is becoming increasingly competitive. Several teams, including the LeBron James-led Sixers, are aiming to claim the top spot.
New York will enter the season as the reigning NBA champions, and they will have the opportunity to prove whether they can maintain their position at the helm. But now, Miami has a star-powered roster capable of challenging them.
Kidd expects increased competition to make the Knicks’ path back to the NBA Finals more difficult, creating major obstacles.
For Kidd, the combination of Antetokounmpo and Adebayo, Spoelstra’s coaching, and Thompson’s shooting gives the Heat plenty of reasons to be considered a team to watch.
And if Miami lives up to that potential, the defending champions are facing a tall task ahead of their title defense season.
