Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had a night to forget during the Oklahoma City Thunder’s emphatic 119-84 Game 1 home victory over the Phoenix Suns on Sunday.
While Gilgeous-Alexander still made his mark at the free-throw line to kick off the first-round Western Conference playoff series, the NBA world was less than enthused about the reigning MVP’s postgame defense of his foul-drawing techniques.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Faces Pushback for Blunt Explanation of High-Volume Free-Throw Attempts
Gilgeous-Alexander delivered another respectable scoring effort against the eighth-seeded Suns, tallying a game-high 25 points to go along with 4 rebounds, 7 assists, and 2 blocks. However, he did so on putrid 5-for-18 shooting (27.8%), missing all four of his 3-point attempts.
The four-time All-Star did most of his damage at the charity stripe, going 15-for-17 (88.2%) to salvage his stat line before sitting out the fourth quarter of the lopsided affair.
The contest was never in doubt, with the Suns trailing by as many as 39 points against the 64-win defensive juggernaut while mustering a meager 29-for-83 team shooting mark (34.9%).
Still, many took exception to Gilgeous-Alexander’s whistle-generating methods, with a compilation going viral of the Thunder superstar embellishing contact throughout the game.

Other satirical outlets such as Hater Report also piled on Gilgeous-Alexander, calling attention to his “GENERATIONAL WHISTLE.”
While the 27-year-old has long faced accusations of “foul-baiting,” he seemingly sees no issues with his approach. When asked, “What goes into getting to the line a lot and converting that into points?” Gilgeous-Alexander delivered a blunt response.
“When you drive the ball a lot, you get fouled a lot just because most of the fouls happen on drives, and I drive the ball a lot, so that probably adds up to it,” Gilgeous-Alexander said postgame.
“But yeah, I’ve just tried to get better at many aspects over the years that I’ve been in the league, and try to be able to attack teams’ defenses in multiple ways. I feel like I’ve done so and been able to score a few points ’cause of it.”

Gilgeous-Alexander’s explanation seemingly didn’t quell any frustrations, as he continued facing pushback on X.
“This guy can’t be honest for one second about his game,” Denver Nuggets fan account Sleeper Nuggets claimed.

“25 points on 17 FT attempts is a disgusting stat line,” NBA personality Lakers Guru asserted.

“Embarrassing stuff. Whatever you do, don’t look at Shai’s efficiency in the playoffs since 2024,” NBA personality @BarryOnHere reacted.

While Gilgeous-Alexander has shot at least 51% from the field in four straight regular seasons, including a career-high 55.3% this season, he has never reached the 50% mark during a playoff run.
Still, the shifty score-first guard’s free-throw heavy offensive attack has already proven successful, with OKC aiming to win back-to-back NBA titles behind his steady contributions.
