Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has been the subject of intense scrutiny throughout the 2026 NBA playoffs, with accusations of unethical play persisting. However, the reigning back-to-back MVP silenced his doubters during Wednesday’s Game 2 Western Conference finals clash against the San Antonio Spurs.
Gilgeous-Alexander bounced back from a subpar Game 1 showing to assert himself, thriving in the midrange and hitting a dagger jumper to ice a series-tying 122-113 home victory for the Oklahoma City Thunder. Along the way, the superstar guard also turned heads with a dazzling crossover late in the third quarter.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s Electric Ball-Handling Captivates NBA World
After logging 24 points on woeful 7-for-23 shooting (30.4%) in Monday’s 122-115 double-overtime series-opening home loss, Gilgeous-Alexander responded admirably in Game 2.
The 27-year-old finished with a game-high 30 points, 4 rebounds, 9 assists, and 2 blocks, shooting an efficient 12-for-24 (50%). Perhaps most importantly to his detractors, he attempted only 6 free throws, doing most of his damage in the midrange as he put his masterful shot creation ability on full display.

In the waning minutes of the third quarter, Gilgeous-Alexander put the moves on Spurs rookie forward Carter Bryant. After crossing over Bryant and faking him out with a hesitation move, Gilgeous-Alexander completely lost the 20-year-old, freeing him up to drain another midrange shot to put OKC up 85-77.

Aside from Gilgeous-Alexander, the Thunder flexed their depth and league-best defense, securing a staggering 57-25 edge in bench scoring and 27-10 advantage in points off turnovers, negating Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama’s 21-point, 17-rebound, 4-block performance.
“The guys brought it tonight. Knowing what it would have meant if we lost this one, we brought the energy from the jump,” Gilgeous-Alexander said postgame.
Game 3 will take place in San Antonio on Friday, with both sides vying for a 2-1 series lead.
