‘Why Does Donald Trump Always Have to Ruin a Good Thing?’ — Congressman Rips President for Making Knicks’ NBA Finals Run About Him

New York Congressman Hakeem Jeffries took issue with President Donald Trump's plan to attend the NBA Finals.

The NBA Finals continue to grab the attention of more than just the sports world. While that grip does not appear to be lessening, it veers in myriad directions.

Now, the buzz surrounding the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs has taken a turn that will elicit a wide range of responses.

Congressman Hakeem Jeffries Rips President Trump Over NBA Finals Attendance

When the Knicks advanced to the NBA Finals, their fanbase bubbled over with pride. Since their last appearance in the championship series, New York has endured lean years marked by plenty of losing. Now, on the backs of a team that put together a great playoff run, the Knicks’ good fortune took a political turn.

Team owner James Dolan extended an invitation to the President to attend Game 3. The New York Congressman bristled at the idea. Hakeem Jeffries appeared on CNN to express his opinion.

“Why does Donald Trump always have to ruin a good thing? The Knicks haven’t been in the NBA Finals for 27 years, the city is trying to celebrate this, we’ve embraced this team, and this guy has to inject himself,” asserts Jeffries, who is also the House Minority Leader.

The beef between Trump and Jeffries spans multiple fronts. First, Trump is a Republican. In contrast, Jeffries is a prominent Democrat. The two parties continue to wage party warfare. As a result, each side regularly takes to appearing on various media platforms to shade the other.

However, this contention seems rooted in more personal aspects. Both Jeffries and Trump are New York natives. They each claim a measure of New York Knicks fandom. Under those circumstances, the sides of their fandom have been drawn down political lines.

As the largest city in the United States, Knicks fans of all political persuasions will turn out for the NBA Finals. These two are not the only New York politicians to opine about the team. Zohran Mamdani, the mayor of New York, sat down with Pablo Torre to discuss his views on the franchise.

During both terms of his presidency, Trump has made it a point not only to attend but also to exert influence over sports. For example, on June 14, which coincides with the president’s birthday, UFC Freedom 250 will air live from the South Lawn of the White House.

After Game 2 in San Antonio, the NBA Finals shift to Madison Square Garden for Games 3 and 4. The Knicks lead the series 1-0 right now.
