When the conversation turns to longevity in the NBA, one name that inevitably comes up is LeBron James. There is little argument that the Philadelphia 76ers star continues to produce at an extraordinary level despite entering an age when most players are well past their prime.
However, NBA legend Charles Barkley has pushed back against the popular narrative that James is somehow defying Father Time, sparking strong reactions among NBA fans.

On Bill Simmons’ podcast, Barkley explained that he does not agree with the idea that James is beating Father Time. While acknowledging that James continues to post impressive individual numbers, Barkley argued that those statistics should not completely overshadow the Los Angeles Lakers’ recent lack of postseason success.
“We have to be honest about LeBron,” Barkley said. “Just because you’re putting up good numbers doesn’t mean you’re being effective. I’m not taking a shot at LeBron, it’s just facts. People say he’s defying the odds, but if my memory serves me correctly, he’s gotten swept in the playoffs the last couple of years.”

“LeBron is playing well, but to say he’s beating Father Time… But they got swept the last two years in the playoffs, so don’t tell me how great he’s playing.”
Barkley’s assessment did not sit well with a large section of NBA fans, who quickly took to social media to challenge his argument.
“I never seen this energy for (Michael) Jordan when he played for the wizards n couldn’t make the playoffs, LeBron is the same player you right his 41 but at the same time he just putting up easy useless stats then why everyone upset he joined Philly talking about chasing rings,” one fan wrote.

“We don’t take Barkley opinion serious anymore,” a comment read.
“Then they call LeBron fans glazers cause we defend him , when we have to hear blasphemous statements from multiple people like this every day. No athlete as good as Bron has ever been criticized this much it’s insane,” a fan chimed in.

“So, he is not beating Father Time because he got swept in the playoffs? Was he playing every position and was he coaching the team? LeBron didn’t cause Luka Doncic to get injured. He held up his own end of the bargain – regardless of age. That’s beating Father Time,” a user bashed Barkley.

“Yes it’s LeBron’s fault that Luka missed the second round series against Oklahoma City. Still somehow with Luka out, LeBron got Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura to average 21 points and 20 points respectively against No.1 seed,” another fan added.
The 41-year-old is coming off a season with the Lakers in which he appeared in 60 games, averaging 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists while playing roughly 33 minutes per game.

However, Barkley’s criticism largely stems from the end of James’ Lakers tenure and the team’s inability to make a deep postseason run.
James helped guide Los Angeles past the Houston Rockets in the opening round of the 2026 playoffs, but the Lakers were ultimately eliminated by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Semifinals with a 4-0 sweep.
Nonetheless, James deserves plenty of credit for shouldering a heavy workload deep into his career, especially as the Lakers battled significant injury issues that kept their star duo of Dončić and Reaves sidelined last season.
