Nick Chubb officially signed with the Houston Texans on Monday, June 09, bringing his seven-year venture with the Cleveland Browns to a close. The four-time Pro Bowl RB was drafted by Cleveland in the early second round of the 2018 NFL draft, a year after they picked Myles Garrett No. 1 overall.
Garrett was one of the few people “lobbying” for the Browns to retain Chubb and has now termed his departure an emotional blow for him.

Myles Garrett Gets Candid About Nick Chubb’s Emotional Departure
Garrett himself has been on a rollercoaster ride this year. He initially requested a trade from the Browns before accepting a record-breaking contract extension to stay put in Cleveland.
The edge rusher is now dealing with the loss of his long-time teammate, and, in a recent press conference at the Browns minicamp, Garrett revealed he and the whole locker room would miss Chubb.
“I love Nick. I think a lot of the guys who are in this locker room still feel the same way as I do,” Garrett said. “It crushed us to see him get injured and have to battle through, and then it happened again. So, we want the very best for him. Happy to see him still able to play, still able to do his thing. Want to see him go back to being the player that he was and have a smile on his face, continue to ball out.”
Chubb had already undergone grueling knee surgery and a lengthy rehab process while playing for the Georgia Bulldogs at the college level and suffered the second brutal knee injury of his football career in Week 2 of the 2023 season.
He returned to action midway through the 2024 season, but his performances were not what the Browns fan base had come to expect from one of their brightest stars. He averaged 3.3 yards per carry while scoring three touchdowns in eight games.
Chubb was out of contract following the 2024 season, but Garrett believed in his potential and revealed he had been lobbying the Browns’ G.M., Andrew Berry, to bring him back, though it was to no avail.

“That was part of my talks with AB a couple of months ago, asking about the situation with Nick and how that’s going to work out, and how we can get him back here,” Garrett said. “I know he means a lot to the fans, but he means a lot to us in the locker room. So, it’s an emotional blow to not have him here.”
However, Garrett knows this is business and expressed confidence in the Browns’ current running back room: Jerome Ford, Pierre Strong Jr., and rookies Quinshon Judkins and Dylan Simpson.
“We’ve got to keep on moving, keep on trucking. We’ve got some very talented backs in that room, some young, hungry guys who have a hell of an example to watch and some shoes to fill. But he’s one of the best to ever do it in the Brown and Orange, and we appreciate everything he’s done.”
Chubb signed a one-year, $2.5M deal that can be worth up to $5M with the Texans, and Garrett had nothing but the best wishes for the running back. That, however, is unless he plays against him and the Browns.
