Myles Garrett made history in 2025, setting the single-season sack record. Unfortunately, Garrett’s squad, the Cleveland Browns, didn’t have much team success. The Browns’ major story was the quarterback position. Rookie Shedeur Sanders took over the starting role in November and delivered mixed results.
However, Garrett was asked about the team’s quarterback spot and offered a decisive response.
Myles Garrett Supports Shedeur Sanders as QB1 for Browns
Sanders played in eight games as a rookie and threw for 1,400 yards with seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions. PFSN’s QB Impact metric gave Sanders a 56.96 grade, which was 46th out of 48 qualified passers.
The Browns still have Deshaun Watson, who was once one of the best quarterbacks in the league, on the roster as well. Watson didn’t play in 2025, but he’s under contract for the 2026 season.
However, Garrett thinks the job belongs to Sanders. The star defender recently appeared on Micah Parsons’ podcast and talked about the young passer. “That’s who we are looking at as the guy,” Garrett said of Sanders. “We are going to give him a shot to prove that he’s the guy.”
Sanders was widely expected to be one of the first quarterbacks selected in the 2025 NFL Draft, but ended up falling to the Browns in the fifth round. Veteran Joe Flacco began as the team’s starter but was eventually traded to the Cincinnati Bengals. After Flacco, the team turned to rookie Dillon Gabriel. Gabriel struggled and dealt with injuries, which led to Sanders getting the job for the rest of the season.
“(Shedeur) was the last person to be on the field, and he showed some flashes,” Garrett explained. “So we’re going to give him an opportunity to show what he can do.”
The Browns do have two first-round picks in the 2026 draft, but this isn’t expected to be a deep class. As a result, the team will likely roll with Sanders and Watson for one more season.
In 2025, Garrett played in all 17 games and collected 60 tackles, 23 sacks, and 33 tackles for loss. The future Hall of Famer broke T.J. Watt and Michael Strahan’s previous record of 22.5 sacks in a season.
PFSN’s EDGE Impact metric gave Garrett an elite 95.6 grade, which was the best grade out of 123 qualified edge-rushers. Garrett has now had 10+ sacks in eight consecutive seasons.
The hope now is that the Browns can get back to contention, so Garrett has a chance to play more meaningful snaps. Garrett just signed a massive four-year extension with the Browns before the 2025 season.
