What Mike Williams Is Doing After Retiring From the NFL

After having a rough last season with the New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024, Williams signed a one-year contract with the Chargers earlier this year in March. Fans were excited to see his one last ride with quarterback Justin Herbert. But just a few months later, in July, he announced his retirement from football.

Williams was drafted seventh overall in 2017 by the Chargers, the team that helped shape him into the player he is, and where he remained until 2023 before moving to the Jets and Steelers last season.

In his successful career, he recorded 5,104 receiving yards and 32 touchdowns, including two seasons with 1,000+ yards. He could have had an even brighter career if injuries hadn’t been such a major issue for him.

Williams missed the first six games of his rookie season due to a back injury, and he played a full season only twice (2018 and 2024. Although he played all 18 regular-season games last year, past injuries still significantly impacted his performance.

Several concerning injuries, including a back injury in 2022 and a torn ACL in 2023, significantly impacted his abilities and held him back in 2024, leading to a disappointing season where he was ranked No. 74 on the PFSN’s WR Impact.

The former Chargers WR fought through injuries for years and kept showing up on the field, but eventually his body told him enough is enough. After a rough season last year, Williams realized he was no longer capable of performing like he used to, so he decided to retire from the NFL after eight seasons.

While many players after retirement turn to jobs such as broadcasting, coaching, business pursuits, or philanthropy, Williams has preferred to stay out of the limelight. It remains to be seen which path he chooses to follow after his long and memorable career on the gridiron.

Mike Williams may have stepped away earlier than fans expected, but his impact on the Chargers and his reputation as a big-play receiver won’t be forgotten. Now entering a new chapter, the football fans are eagerly waiting to see where life takes him next. Who knows, perhaps his love for football brings him back to the field, but this time with a mic in his hand.
