How Did Mike Vrabel End Up Head Coach of the New England Patriots?

Vrabel’s transition from player to coach happened quickly. After playing in the NFL for 14 years, including three Super Bowl titles with the Patriots, he retired in 2011 and joined the Ohio State coaching staff as a linebackers coach.

While with Urban Meyer’s staff at Ohio State and had his first opportunity to lead his own linebackers room. Even then, people around the program saw the traits Vrabel brought to OSU. He was demanding of his players, but being a former player himself, he understood how to communicate with everyone.

After Ohio State, he rose through the ranks and joined the NFL when the Houston Texans hired him as their linebackers coach. Vrabel spent a few years learning the league as an assistant, working with top defensive players and earning a reputation for being a detail-oriented assistant coach. In 2017, he became the defensive coordinator for the Texans, which was his first chance to call a defense and lead an entire unit.

His next move happened rather fast when the Tennessee Titans hired Vrabel as their head coach in 2018, giving him his first shot at leading an entire team. Over the next few years, he built a strong team, coaching stars like Derrick Henry and A.J. Brown along the way. The Titans made the playoffs three times, won two AFC South titles, and reached the AFC Championship Game in 2019.

Vrabel’s reputation reached its highest point in 2021, with the Titans still finishing as the AFC South champion, even while battling nonstop injuries and using a record number of players. That year, Vrabel won the NFL Coach of the Year award, marking the first time a former player had won it.

When the Titans let him go after the 2023 season, Vrabel chose to take time off and evaluate what to do next. He joined the Cleveland Browns as a coaching and personnel consultant. This role kept him involved in the NFL and gave the coach plenty of experience with another organization. Many people around the league expected he would get another head coaching job soon.

That chance came in New England after the Patriots fired Jerod Mayo after the 2024 season. The Patriots had just finished two losing seasons and were looking for a new direction for the franchise. Vrabel brought something unique to the table as a former player on the team who had just signed him to become their head coach.

The results were immediate in New England, with Vrabel and Patriots quarterback Drake Maye leading the Patriots to 14 wins, their first AFC East title since the 2018 season, and a deep playoff run that will end with Super Bowl 60.

The growth the Patriots saw in 2025 on both sides of the ball under Vrabel was astonishing. In 2024, New England ranked 26th in the NFL with a PFSN Offense Impact score of 67.6. That ranking skyrocketed to second overall in 2025, as the Patriots finished behind only the Los Angeles Rams for the best offense in the league, scoring 86.6, an almost 20-point increase.

Because of his success, Vrabel won NFL Coach of the Year for the second time, joining a small group of coaches to earn the award with more than one team.
