The Pittsburgh Steelers might be in a tight race for momentum as the season winds down, but head coach Mike Tomlin isn’t shy about recognizing the progress of a rival’s young quarterback.
What Did Mike Tomlin Say To Applaud Shedeur Sanders’ Composure and Growth?
As they gear up for their Week 17 clash with the Cleveland Browns, Tomlin has showered praise on quarterback Shedeur Sanders, calling him “a legitimate competitor” and highlighting his toughness.
Tomlin turned a scouting evaluation into a character endorsement. “He’s not lacking confidence. He’s a legitimate competitor,” Tomlin said of Sanders. “I can’t say enough about his toughness. I hadn’t seen him blink in the face of pressure. He doesn’t watch the rush the way that certain guys do.”

Those words carry weight coming from Tomlin, a coach who rarely gets caught up in hype or speculation, especially regarding players outside his own team. Despite a challenging debut season with 1,103 yards, six touchdowns, eight interceptions, and an 18.5 QBR, Sanders has demonstrated qualities that coaches across the league appreciate beyond just the numbers.
Tomlin acknowledged Sanders’ developing connection with Cleveland’s young offensive squad and their play-caller, stating, “I just think it’s always good when a unit or collective is growing together… They’re displaying no fear and they probably haven’t been in it long enough to be wary.”
Veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers also recently spoke about Sanders‘ journey, telling reporters, “I followed Shedeur’s career. I mean, any football fan that watched him go from Jackson to Boulder and I, being kind of a former Pac-12 school, you know, obviously was pulling for him. And, you know, there’s a tough draft slide, obviously a much longer wait than mine was, but it seems like he’s been patient and worked on his craft, and he’s been playing pretty good the last few weeks.”

In April, Tomlin’s no-nonsense tone echoed his approach during the 2025 NFL Draft, when the Steelers passed on Sanders in the first round and instead opted for defensive tackle Derrick Harmon. At the time, Tomlin said the organization was committed to re-establishing a physical identity: “There’s a commitment here with this draft group to re-establish physicality and big man presence.”
For Sanders, these last two games might hold more significance than his current record indicates. With the Browns out of playoff contention, the rookie’s prospects as a potential long-term starter are uncertain. While some in the organization may already be leaning one way or another, a strong finish, especially against division foes like Pittsburgh, could tip the balance.
Sanders is ranked 44th in the NFL in PFSN’s QB Impact Score through 6 games, with a 56.6 grade. And the Browns are ranked 32nd in offense with a 53.0 grade in PFSN’s Offense Impact metric.
Tomlin’s compliments weren’t about endorsements; they were a reflection of what’s visible on tape: a young quarterback still learning, still fighting, and most importantly, still standing. For the Browns, that may be enough to keep watching.
