Mike McDaniel’s Contract, Salary, and Net Worth: How Much Money Do the Dolphins Owe After Firing HC?

The Miami Dolphins fired head coach Mike McDaniel on Thursday. Here are his contract details and the amount of money Miami owes to him.

Mike McDaniel never played in the NFL, but he has spent nearly two decades in the league, working his way up from a Denver Broncos intern to offensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers before becoming the Miami Dolphins’ head coach in 2022.

McDaniel guided the Dolphins to the playoffs in his first two seasons, including finishing second in the AFC in Year 2. But after missing the postseason in 2024 and 2025, the Dolphins decided to part ways with him.

Let’s examine his contract, salary, net worth, and the money the Dolphins owe after the decision to fire him:

Mike McDaniel’s Salary and Contract

McDaniel reportedly earned around $4 million annually as the Dolphins’ head coach. Unlike player salaries, NFL coaching contract details are not made public, so these figures are based on estimates.

He signed a contract extension prior to the 2024 season, and his overall earnings were expected to increase significantly in the long term.

McDaniel was rewarded with the new contract after leading the Dolphins to the postseason in back-to-back years (2022 and 2023) for the first time since 2001. However, they have yet to win a playoff game since 2000.

McDaniel signed his contract extension before the 2024 campaign, which tied him to Miami through the 2028 season. Since he still had three years left on his deal, the Dolphins will owe him close to $12 million.

According to PFSN’s Offense Impact Metric, the Dolphins had the 19th-ranked offense in the league this past season, but the franchise decided to make a change.

McDaniel’s Net Worth

Since McDaniel never had an NFL playing career, his only time on the field was as a wide receiver at Yale. So the bulk of his earnings will likely come from nearly two decades of coaching, and his net worth is estimated to be over $5 million as of late 2025.

For comparison, the head coaches with the highest net worth are Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid ($50 million), Houston Texans HC DeMeco Ryans ($33 million), and Pittsburgh Steelers HC Mike Tomlin ($30 million).

McDaniel has also invested in real estate, reportedly owning a $5.3 million mansion in Fort Lauderdale, one of Miami’s most exclusive neighborhoods. The property features a home office, gym, infinity pool, multiple garages, and guest houses, and luxury cars are a common sight in the area.

Beyond football and a luxury lifestyle, McDaniel is also active in philanthropy. He supports charitable causes that provide academic assistance to underprivileged youth, participates in mentoring programs, makes regular donations, and advocates for mental health awareness.
