‘A Game-Changer’ — NFL Analyst Argues Mike Evans to 49ers Is Offseason’s ‘Best Move’ on PFSN’s Football Debate Club

One NFL analyst believes that star receiver Mike Evans signing with the San Francisco 49ers in free agency is the best move of the offseason.

Mike Evans signed a three-year, $42.4 million contract with the San Francisco 49ers in free agency, leaving the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after 12 seasons. The deal is basically structured as a one-year, $14.3 million commitment with team options for 2027 and 2028.

Although the Buccaneers reportedly offered more money, Evans chose to play for the 49ers. For a receiver with 11 straight 1,000-yard seasons before injuries limited him to eight games in 2025, the price is strikingly low, and it is now being considered as the best move of the offseason.

Mike Evans Fills Many of the 49ers’ Major Needs

Brandon Aiyuk hasn’t played since tearing his ACL, MCL, and meniscus in October 2024, and it is very likely that he won’t be on the 2026 roster. Jauan Jennings remains unsigned in free agency, but he is unlikely to return to the 49ers.

San Francisco paired Evans with Christian Kirk, who signed a one-year, $3 million deal, forming an exciting trio alongside Ricky Pearsall. Evans will slide into the boundary “X” role, giving Brock Purdy a true outside weapon for the next season.

In a recent appearance on PFSN’s “Football Debate Club,” analyst Alex Kennedy talked about Evans’ move to the 49ers and how impactful it actually is.

“Mike Evans to the 49ers, I loved this move when it was reported as a three-year, $60 million deal,” Kennedy said. “When you find out that it’s essentially a one-year, $14 million deal, I think it’s a super low-risk, reward move. I think he’s a game-changer for them.”

“He’s selfless,” Kennedy added. “He’s never been someone that really cares about targets. We’ve seen that in Tampa. He’s a Super Bowl champion. I think the only way this doesn’t work is if he has some kind of injuries, but I think he’s going to be exactly what Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers need. I think this will be more like Davante Adams to the Rams than DeAndre Hopkins to the Ravens.”

That Adams comparison is worth noting, as he joined the Rams at 32 and led the NFL with 14 receiving touchdowns in 2025, helping Los Angeles reach the NFC Championship Game.

Evans enters a similar setup, being a proven red zone threat joining an offense already built around Christian McCaffrey and George Kittle. The star tight end’s Achilles injury could sideline him at the start of the season, making Evans’ presence even more critical for Purdy.

The NFC West sent three teams to the playoffs last season, with Seattle winning Super Bowl 60. The Rams are now viewed as the best team in the league after adding Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson. Evans’ signing could help San Francisco position itself to close the gap on a loaded division without taking a big risk.

According to PFSN’s Offense Impact Metric, the 49ers had the fourth-best offense in the league last season with an impact score of 85.2. Adding a player like Evans could very well make them one of the most explosive offenses in the league.
