Michael Penix Jr. Injury Update: When Will the Falcons QB Return to Action?

The Falcons face rising uncertainty as Michael Penix Jr.’s knee injury sparks concern and forces major questions about the team’s path forward.

The Atlanta Falcons enter a critical stretch without the clarity they hoped for on Michael Penix Jr.’s status. Monday’s update offered only partial answers, leaving the team waiting for medical confirmation and forcing a reset of its quarterback plans.

With uncertainties mounting, the Falcons prepare for the possibility that its rookie passer may not return this year.

What Penix’s Setback Means for the Atlanta Falcons’ Season Plans

Head coach Raheem Morris announced that Penix will be placed on injured reserve after injuring his left knee against the Carolina Panthers. This move guarantees he will miss at least four games. Morris acknowledged the concern inside the building, saying, “There is always concern” that the injury could be season-ending.

WSB-TV in Atlanta and NFL Network reported possible ACL damage, but Morris declined to confirm. He said, “I do not want to say that because it is not my place to say yet.”

Penix completed an MRI on Monday and will seek additional medical evaluations. Morris indicated that several steps must occur before the team can provide a definitive diagnosis. This injury affects the same knee in which Penix suffered a bone bruise earlier in the season, though Morris said he was unsure whether the two issues are related.

The quarterback was hurt late in the third quarter when Panthers safety Tre’Von Moehrig rushed in unblocked and took him down as he released the ball. If this injury ends his season, it would mark his fifth season-ending injury in eight years, including previous knee and shoulder injuries during college.

Morris expressed his disappointment, saying, “Hurting for the young man.” Before the injury, Penix’s production reflected a challenging rookie season. According to TruMedia, he ranks 25th in EPA per dropback, 29th in completion percentage and 31st in off target rate. His earliest possible return would be Week 16.

Additional context comes from PFSN’s QB Impact metric. Penix earned a QB Impact Score of 69.7 for the 2025 season, which resulted in a D+ grade and a season ranking of 26. His overall rank since 2000 stands at 657. He played nine games, starting all nine, and completed 166 of 276 pass attempts for a completion percentage of 60.1 percent.

The data shows that his statistical profile closely mirrors the average output measured by the same system, underscoring how his season landed in the middle tier of quarterback performance.

With Penix sidelined, veteran Kirk Cousins returns to the starting role. Easton Stick becomes the backup. The Falcons will also monitor wide receiver Drake London, who is week-to-week with a PCL injury. For now, the team will wait for full medical clarity as they prepare for a stretch that could shape the conclusion of their season.
