South Carolina vs. Texas Prediction and Preview

Sean Miller recorded his 500th career victory as a collegiate head coach with Saturday’s win at Oklahoma, and enters Tuesday’s contest with an on-court career record of 500-205 (.709) in 21 seasons. That milestone came in dramatic fashion, as the Longhorns rallied from a 14-point deficit to win 79-69.

The catalyst for Texas has been Swain’s remarkable run. Over his last four games, the junior has averaged 25.8 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 2.5 steals in 37.1 minutes per contest.

Against Oklahoma, Swain scored 13 of his team-high 18 points in the second half and pulled down 10 rebounds, marking the fourth straight game that Swain has amassed at least 18 points.

The Longhorns also have firepower beyond Swain. Sophomore Matas Vokietaitis tallied 14 points and six rebounds, junior Camden Heide posted 13 points, and senior Jordan Pope recorded 12 points in the Oklahoma win. Texas shot 72% from the floor in the second half and 60% for the game.

The Longhorns are averaging 85.5 points per game, and their field goal percentage is high at 49.5%. That offense faces a Gamecocks defense that has struggled mightily in recent weeks.

South Carolina’s issues are stark. The Gamecocks are looking to snap a three-game losing streak in league action after a tough overtime loss at home to LSU on Saturday. Before that, Florida demolished them 95-48, a 47-point beatdown that exposed serious defensive deficiencies.

Meechie Johnson continued his standout play, leading the team with 21 points, six assists, and five rebounds against the Tigers. In eight SEC contests, Johnson is averaging 17.6 points, 5.0 assists, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game.

The veteran guard has been a bright spot, hitting 23 straight free throws in game action dating back to the team’s victory over Oklahoma. But South Carolina has struggled on the road, winning only 1 out of 6 away games.

The loss of Collin Murray-Boyles to the NBA has left a massive void in the frontcourt that Lamont Paris hasn’t been able to fill.

As a result, this matchup heavily favors Texas. The Longhorns are averaging 85.5 points, 10.6 more than the Gamecocks allow. When Texas scores more than 74.9 points, the Longhorns boast a 12-4 record. Expect them to extend that with a win tonight.

Prediction: South Carolina 68, Texas 81
