There has been discussion about the NCAA potentially expanding the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments in the future as bubble teams continue to struggle. The idea has not been well-received by several college basketball analysts, who have strongly criticized the proposal.
College Basketball Analysts Criticize NCAA Expansion Idea
Until this year’s March Madness finishes, the NCAA won’t be holding any more discussions on expanding both the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments. For the past few months, discussions have been held about the NCAA possibly expanding the tournament field to 72 or 76 teams starting in 2027.
That idea has not sat well with college basketball analysts. Matt Norlander wrote on X:
“Not one (1) team that gets left out this year will have a legitimate gripe for its exclusion. Expansion talks are on pause until April, but everyone in that room must acknowledge that this year is all the evidence you need that the NCAA Tournament should not expand. It’s like a sign from God.”

If the expansion comes to fruition next year, it won’t be the first time the NCAA has expanded the tournament field. In 2011, the NCAA Tournaments expanded from 64 to 68 teams. From the change, the First Round was introduced. The round gave an opportunity to the four lowest-seeded conference champions and four lowest-seeded at-large teams to earn spots in the bracket.
Along with Norlander, veteran college basketball reporter Dick Weiss expressed his displeasure about the expansion. He said, “Don’t tell me the NCAA tournament should expand with so many bubble teams laying an egg.” NCAA President Charlie Baker said that he supported the expansion move for the cause of adding value to the tournament.

PFSN’s Logan Horito reported that Kentucky head coach John Calipari showed his disapproval during a press conference last year, giving a thumbs-down when asked about expansion and urging officials not to “screw it up” and to “leave it alone.”
Horito also revealed that Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo shared similar disapproval of the proposed expansion. He simply said, “I just think it’s going to get watered down.” He warned that the expansion could dilute the tournament. It remains to be seen what the final decision will be when talks resume.
