It’s called March Madness for a reason. If the goal of this exercise was truly to determine who the best team in college basketball was, we’d shorten the field and play a series, much like what the NBA does.
But that’s not the case, and in this environment, just about anything can happen. That said, Michigan and Duke enter play not only with impressive numbers against this field, but also as impressive as we’ve seen since the pandemic.
2026 March Madness Elites: Michigan and Duke
Every season, I chart predictive numbers in the hopes of crafting the perfect March Madness bracket. It’s never going to happen, but it’s a puzzle I enjoy each year and one I feel I get better at, with more data points to consider.
I’ve backtested what wins in March, and that is what fuels my formula. Naturally, seeding plays into success as well, so when looking at historical rankings, I take the team’s seed and adjust my formula accordingly.

This allows me to cross-reference past teams and stack them by the most dominant profiles entering March Madness.
This is a storytelling list more than a predictive one. As mentioned, anything can happen in this silly event that we all love.
Top 5 Profiles Since 2021
- 2026 Michigan (TBD)
- 2024 Purdue (Championship Game)
- 2025 Duke (Final Four)
- 2026 Duke (TBD)
- 2024 UConn (National Champions)
We saw a clash of the titans in 2024, and they met in the final. I love it when it works out like that, but for every instance like that, you have one like last season, where Duke was the only team in my top 10 historic rankings for the season, and they fell short.

Extend the list, and we actually welcome a third member of this field into the equation.
- 2021 Michigan (Elite Eight)
- 2022 Arizona (Sweet 16)
- 2022 Gonzaga (Sweet 16)
- 2021 Illinois (Round 2)
- 2021 Gonzaga (Championship Game)
- 2025 Auburn (Final Four)
- 2026 Arizona (TBD)
- 2022 Kansas (National Champions)
- 2021 Baylor (National Champions)
- 2025 Florida (National Champions)
Nobody likes picking chalk in their brackets, but remember that you’re making 63 picks. It’s perfectly OK to go chalk at the end and embrace chaos early on. Duke and Michigan have been top-three teams for me since January, and they could well be the last two teams left standing in April.
