Joshua Jefferson suffered an ankle injury against Tennessee State, putting Iowa State’s championship aspirations in jeopardy.

Iowa State forward Joshua Jefferson was forced to leave the Cyclones’ first-round March Madness matchup against the Tennessee State Tigers with a suspected ankle injury. Jefferson appeared to twist his ankle while attempting a layup and had to be helped off the floor.

The incident occurred just three minutes into the contest. Iowa State will now await word on his availability for the remainder of the NCAA Tournament.

Jefferson landed awkwardly after the attempt and was unable to put any weight on his left foot. He was helped to the locker room, and the CBS broadcast later revealed he has been ruled out for the rest of the game.

The senior is averaging 16.9 points, 7.6 rebounds, 4.9 assists, and 1.7 steals per game this year. He is shooting 47% from the field and 34.5% from 3-point range.

Additionally, Jefferson had scored at least 10 points in every game this season prior to his early exit against Tennessee State. He has also recorded two triple-doubles for Iowa State during the current campaign.

Jefferson serves as a vital leader for the frontcourt, having earned consensus second-team All-American honors for his regular-season performance. An extended absence would severely impact the Cyclones’ championship aspirations.
