An injury cloud hangs over Jayden Quaintance’s availability for the NCAA Men’s Tournament. The Kentucky Wildcats forward has been sidelined with knee swelling since January, having suffered that issue just a few games after his return from a torn ACL. As Quaintance looks to return to action, we give you the latest on his status for March Madness.
Jayden Quaintance Injury Update: Status for the NCAA Tournament
It appears that this Friday’s opening-round clash between the Kentucky Wildcats and the Santa Clara Broncos (tip-off at 12:15 p.m. ET) will come too soon for Quaintance. Kentucky head coach Mark Pope provided an update on the 18-year-old’s status during his radio show on Monday.
Pope didn’t completely rule out a possible return for Quaintance but admitted it was unlikely he would be available for the first round on Friday or for a second-round game.
“JQ is making progress, but I don’t think he’s going to be able to cross the finish line before this weekend,” Pope said (via UK Wildcats Wire).
Quaintance is currently in his sophomore year of college and is expected to be a 2026 NBA Draft lottery candidate. He showcased his potential in his freshman year for Arizona State, averaging 9.4 points, 7.9 rebounds, 2.6 blocks, and 1.1 steals per game. He also shot an impressive 52.5% from the field.
In February 2025, Quaintance tore his ACL and missed the remainder of the season. He then entered the transfer portal and later transferred to the Kentucky Wildcats.
This year, he has made only four appearances for Kentucky and last played against the Missouri Tigers in early January. He has averaged 5.0 points and 5.0 rebounds for the Cats.
The Kentucky Wildcats have endured a difficult season so far, with injuries to several star players preventing them from finding any consistency. While the win-or-go-home NCAA Tournament provides the team with an opportunity to spring a few surprises, their chances of making a deep run will certainly be hampered by the many injuries.

While Quaintance remains sidelined for now, the return of Kam Williams from injury and the emergence of freshman Malachi Moreno are expected to boost Kentucky’s hopes of a deep run in the NCAA Tournament.
Going into the NCAA Tournament, the Cats have a 21-13 overall record for the year. They were beaten by the Florida Gators in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament and will hope for at least a repeat of last year’s run to the Sweet 16.
