Kentucky governor Andy Beshear has expressed concerns about some decisions at the University of Kentucky, including a thinly veiled dig at the new deal given to retiring athletics director Mitch Barnhart. His words have added further pressure to Kentucky after what has been a tense few months in Lexington.
Amid high expectations, the Wildcats finished the college basketball season with a 22-14 overall record. Mark Pope’s team was eliminated in the second round of the NCAA Tournament after spending a whopping $22 million on the roster.
College Basketball World Reacts to Governor Andy Beshear Calling Out Kentucky Wildcats
In a statement released on Tuesday, Beshear said he is losing confidence in how the University of Kentucky is being run. His list of concerns included the hiring of a new dean of law, Greg Van Tatenhove, as well as the deal worth nearly $1 million reportedly handed out to Barnhart ahead of his retirement.
“I am losing confidence and growing increasingly concerned with the management and decision-making at the University of Kentucky. My concerns include the creation of a new $1 million job that has no defined duties and the announcement that the new dean of law was the only candidate not recommended by the law school faculty,” the governor’s statement read.
“I worry that these actions are related to certain donors pushing partisan and undue outside influence onto the university. I hope students, faculty, trustees, and the community attend this week’s board meetings and ask the tough questions that should be answered.”

The statement drew plenty of reactions from college basketball analysts and Kentucky insiders, who were left stunned.
“You almost never see a sitting Governor criticize publicly the head of the state’s signature University. And is the $1 million job he mentions the Barnhart one? If so, wow,” Kentucky Sports Radio host Matt Jones wrote on X.

Jones called out the University of Kentucky for not allowing any questioning of Barnhart’s new contract.
“I will note yet again, you get to a point where the Governor publicly calls out your decision making when you continue to make decisions and feel like you don’t have to explain them to the public. Not allowing any questioning of the Mitch contract was a massive PR mistake by UK,” he added.
Kentucky Sports Radio’s Jack Pilgrim referenced Barnhart’s “knuckleheads” comment over criticism of his new role while reacting to the statement.
“Gov. Andy Beshear from the top rope — add him to the list of those concerned about ‘management and decision-making at the University of Kentucky.’ We found our next ‘knucklehead,'” Pilgrim wrote.

Kentucky football journalist Jon Hale also chimed in.
“So, this just got serious,” he wrote.
247 Sports’ Kyle Tucker called the statement from Governor Beshear “a wild development.”
“Pretty wild development. Kentucky’s governor taking aim at AD Mitch Barnhart’s golden parachute,” he wrote on X.

KY Insider founder Tristan Pharis also chimed in.
“As Kentucky basketball sits with 8 of 15 roster spots still open, the Governor is questioning the University for the creation of a $1 million job ‘that has no defined duties’ for the exiting Athletic Director. Everything is fine,” Pharis wrote.

KSR senior insider Justin Rowland called on Beshear to act and enforce real change rather than just releasing statements to put pressure on individuals.
“Let me say that ‘worry’ is definitely within the range of fair responses. But the most powerful man in the state issuing a public ‘worry’ statement isn’t very helpful. Act or do not act,” Rowland wrote.
With Beshear expressing his concerns and calling out how the University of Kentucky is being run, it will be interesting to see how the next chapter of this situation unfolds.
All eyes will now be on the board of trustees meetings, which will take place on Thursday and Friday, and Pope’s next moves in the transfer portal.
