Gonzaga vs. Portland Prediction: Can the Bulldogs Extend Their Winning Run Against the Pilots Without Braden Huff?

Gonzaga aims to extend winning streak to 16 games, without Braden Huff, against Portland in a Wednesday night WCC clash at the Chiles Center.

No. 6 Gonzaga (22-1, 10-0 WCC) visits Portland (10-14, 3-8 WCC) in a West Coast Conference showdown on Wednesday night at Chiles Center in Portland, Oregon. The Bulldogs are riding high on a 73-65 win over Saint Mary’s on Saturday, extending their winning streak to 15 games.

On the other hand, the Pilots look to halt their three-game losing skid, but they face a strict order on Wednesday, as Gonzaga has won 20 straight over Portland and 47-2 under Mark Few. Our Gonzaga vs. Portland prediction includes projected starting lineups, a full score forecast, and analysis for this WCC showdown.

Gonzaga vs. Portland Prediction and Preview

Graham Ike showed no ill effects from the injury that sidelined him for three games, dropping 30 points to lead Gonzaga to a 73-65 win over the Saint Mary’s Gaels in what could be their final WCC meeting at the McCarthey Athletic Center.

The 6’9″ fifth-year forward, who played for the first time on Saturday after missing the Bulldogs’ past three games due to right ankle soreness, shot 11 of 20 from the field, including 3 of 5 from the 3-point line, and went 5 of 5 from the free-throw line to lead the team to their 15th straight win and improved to 11-0 at home this season.

Ike has performed the heavy lifting for Mark Few’s men after his frontcourt-mate, Braden Huff, sustained a left knee injury during practice. The 6’10” forward was having a breakout season before sustaining the injury, averaging 17.8 points and 5.6 rebounds per game while shooting 66.2% from the field.

In the three games that Ike and Huff were sidelined, Few dug deep, giving scoring opportunities to guards Mario Saint-Supery, Davis Fogle, and Jalen Warley. It showed the depth of Gonzaga’s bench against its WCC foes and the depth of coaching experience that Few has.

Warley (10 points and 7 rebounds) and Emmanuel Innocenti each scored 10 points while Saint-Supery added nine to preserve Ike’s 30-point explosion against Saint Mary’s. They would need more of these while Huff is sidelined and keep the Bulldogs at the top of the WCC and the AP Poll Top 25.

On the other hand, Portland has lost its last three games, including the 104-74 defeat to Washington State on Saturday. Despite the splendid efforts from Joel Foxwell, James O’Donnell, and Cameron Williams, the Pilots ran out of steam while the Cougars shot the lights out from deep, making 16 of 31 shots. Portland made only 5 of 19 shots from the outside and finished at 42% overall.

The 6’1″ Foxwell leads the Pilots’ offense, averaging 15.3 points per game, on 40.4% shooting, including 34.7% marksmanship from the 3-point line. He is the team’s leader in assists (6.8 apg) and steals (1.3 spg). Williams is Portland’s leading rebounder at 5.5 per game.

Gonzaga holds a 111-66 lead in its head-to-head with Portland, and this has blown up under Few’s guidance. The last time the Pilots beat the Bulldogs was on January 9, 2014, 82-73.

I think Gonzaga would still run over Portland despite the absence of Huff, as Ike anchors the Bulldogs’ offense. With Gonzaga moving to the revamped Pac-12 next season, expect the team to go all out and provide Portland a beatdown they will never forget.

Prediction: Gonzaga 85, Portland 63
